I have an opportunity to purchase this photo. It's approx 18x22 and appears legit. Any insights regarding value would be greatly appreciated.

If it's legit and I would make dead certain that it is before purchasing I would guess around $300-$500.

If that was from Kansas I would pay upwards of $500 for it. Looks to be in great shape and fairly large.

Yes Joe, I am in Ann Arbor.

Well...It appears the $1500 asking price is waaaaaay off base. I was thinking $800 - $1000, but I know beans about the value of photos like this.

I wouldn't mind having that photo to go along with my postcard, but $1500.00 appears to high to me also. Just keep in touch with the seller, he might go lower in the future. I picked up the postcard about 25 years ago at a paper show. I thought it was unusual seeing Cobb in the middle of the picture.

The photo has national appeal due to Cobb, but there would be a regional premium in Michigan as it is a uniquely Michigan image. Similar to a University of Illinois football team photo with Dick Butkus getting extra interest from Illinoisans, even though Butkus is well known across the country. If someone from from Maine is quoting you a value, you can add a few $$ to the quote if you are in Ann Arbor. P.s. my parents met and were married in Ann Arbor.

Dave, you are correct. That's why when I give a quote on something like this I ask what would I pay if it was from Kansas. I factor that in. What can't be factored in is the team. Someone might pay more if their relative was on the team or if it was from their hometown. I know I would pay a premium if this was the case. I would also pay more if he was pictured with a minor league club instead of a town team. Finally, if I had a postcard of the same photo I would really be more interested in it, right Joe. happy.gif

Mike, if this is something that you just have to have then I see no problem with your $800-1000 estimate. It's very likely one of a kind and you'll probably never see another one. I know I've paid prices for things that I'll never be able to get my money back on. But I had to have them.

Thanks fellas. I'm going to pass on it. I like it, but don't love it. I would much rather have $1000 trophy or pennant.

Thanks Mike, I just sent him an email. Some questions about the origin, where he got the photo, how long he has had the photo etc.

Why is the "D" logo on Cobb so faint ? I wouldn't think a logo would wear that bad.

Good question on the faded "D" logo... I think it could be one of two explanations...

1. Logo was actually removed, and this is the remaining fabric underneath (uniform may have faded with multiple washings/sun exposure, with the exception of the fabric portion under the "D".

2. The "D" may have been orange that particular season, and orange would show up more faint in a B&W photo?

I don't know how else to explain it, as it seems highly unlikely that a black or navy blue emblem would fade so much.

My guess is the D was orange.

Hello, I have decided to pass on the photo also, the asking price $1000.00 is about double what I would consider paying. The seller indicated he bought this about 20 years ago along with some Dietche Detroit Poatcards from the same man.

That could be Mike. He told me he was offered $850.00 a few years ago and turned it down, hence the $1000.00 price tag.

I think it's a possibility that if that photo were in a Mastro or REA auction it might bring $1,000...on ebay I don't think it would go for more than $500-600. If Cobb were pictured with a team from Nebraska I think I myself would pull the trigger on $1,000.
