Default Post your Leland's pickups in last night's auction

Leland's Auction had some great items in it last night.
Did anyone see the lot that had Joe Jackson's personal family scrapbook?
Way too cool!

I managed to win this lot that contained Johnny Vander Meer's personal trophy ball from the last out of his 5th career shutout on 7/15/41 (his 34th career win). Vandy struck out 11 and posted a 4-hitter against his favorite foil the Boston Braves. A scant 2,012 Boston fans were in attendance of this game.
Vander Meer had 29 shutouts in his ML career that was interrupted by WWII.

More than 25% of his career wins were shutouts, meaning that when he was on, he was on.

I was wondering if anyone else picked up anything cool?

Glad to see you won that, Scott! I won the group of 50 Brooklyn signed balls: http://www.lelands.com/Auction/Aucti...-Baseballs-(50) I'll upgrade a couple of mine and sell the rest.

Was pretty stoked to see the Chub Feeney signed ball go for $500+. Mine isn't quite as nice, but I got it for over $400 less!

congratulations Scott. I woke up this morning GLAD I only won two items. There was so much great stuff last night that I bid on way more than I could really afford. I was the underbidder on the Fatima ad of 1916 Red Sox, and the Mel Ott handwritten letter. Couldn't touch that spectacular portrait photo of Lou Gehrig, which I still think went cheap at $2K + juice. The Ruth signed ball did really well in my opinion.

Great stuff once again!

I was very happy to win this stuff from the Red Sox' 1919 barnstorming tour, especially the action cabinet photos and the telegram from Walter Johnson, offering to pitch. Think the amateur team accepted his offer?

I think I was underbidder on the Ruth barnstorming lot. I ended up winning these two:

Babe Adams estate photograph and RPPC lot. Some very interesting looking stuff in here. Can't wait to get hold of it.

Ol' Pete Fatima poster.

Ditto with the Babe Adams.

I really wanted this lot..but quickly got out of my price range:

Crazy the amount it sold for back in 2005 for the same lot!

http://sports.ha.com/itm/baseball/19.../45091-12219.s

Who ever purchased it and thinking about selling a few, I would be interested

Not the exact same group of pics (17 vs 14, and different ones included), but still a steal in the old auction. This one, not so much.

I really like the look of the trophy and considered bidding, but I noticed the bat was bent and wondered if something like that would be repairable? (Lelands didn't mention the bend in the description, from what I remember) Just an observation. Did anybody else see that? Either way, I'm sure it will display beautifully.

Default This post is not about (Heritage)

I'm sorry I just cannot resist
One of our worthy competitors (Heritage) sold a 1920 World Series photo lot for 64$ and change about 10 years ago (at Heritage) and we got over 1800$ for it Friday night
I'm not naming names (heritage) and I dont mean to point out any inequities here (with HERITAGE) but that is a little lopsided (regarding Heritage) and when you consider where to consign your goods (not to Heritage) you should consider us (Lelands)
To my good friends Chris Ivy, Rob Rosen and Derek Grady (who work for Heritage) dinner is on my consignor next time we are in the same time zone
Sincerely

Jeez Josh. I sense a message within your message, but it's just not clear to me.

I think Josh is implying that there are more idiots in the collecting world today, than ever before. I think I'm in that group

Tom, that's an awesome looking lot of photos. I'm sure at least some of them are from spring training, which for most of Adam's career was in Hot Springs, AR. I've done a lot of research on photographs of baseball in Hot Springs, so if you're interested, I'd love to help look through some photos or scans and see if I can possibly help identify which ones might be from Hot Springs.

I don't know... I'm just guessin' here... Ya think maybe the passage of ten years had a bit more to do with the price disparity than the choice of auction house?

I do.
