Ran into Harry before a Cubs game outside of Wrigley in the lat 80's. Yes. His glasses were that thick. Great to chat with and took a picture with me. Of course the Cubs lost that day to the Cards and when I went home and told my wife we met him, she wanted to know if I got his autograph.. Told her no as I was not really a Harry fan. Wife did not believe me until we got the film developed as proof. Glad I actually did meet him. What a memory.

Ken, I have an almost exact same experience with Harry.
I did manage to pull out my ticket stub and get an autograph.

I started working for the Chicago Cubs in 1982 as game day security and worked my way up to a year round job in Stadium Operations a few short years later so I probably have a million Harry stories. The one that I remember most vividly is this one.

My first ever assignment on opening day 1982 was to be inside the administrative offices and control who was allowed to go to the "Pink Poodle" for a pre-game party. The Poodle as it was called was a gathering point for all members of the media and writers, broadcasters and nearly everyone associated with the media and most were normally invited to stop by and grab a soda of something to eat. Since this was opening day the process was a bit different and those who were normally allowed to make their way upstairs would not be allowed to go.

Being a 18 year old kid from the far north suburbs of Chicago I did not have many chances to mingle with celebrities and found myself easily awestruck the first few days of my employment with the team. On this date I was provided a guest list of those invited to the party and given strict instructions to turn everyone else away. The morning had gone well and I followed my instructions like a good security guard should until the office doors swung wide open and an entourage filled into the foyer with Harry Carey directly in the middle of the fray. My jaw dropped and I stood face to face with the man I had heard most of my childhood while listening to White Sox games. I woke up from my stupor and gathered my thoughts and remembered my assignment. I double checked the guest list and not one person from the Carey group was on the guest list, including Harry. I stood my ground, explained that his name was not on the guest list but let him know I had listed to him since I was a child. Feeling good about having met my first celebrity while I correctly performed my duty as a low level security guard, I know doubt had a smile on my face as I expected the group to turn around and leave without a word. Harry looked my straight in the eye and asked "what the hell is going on here"? He and most of his group tossed up a tirade of comments at me asking me if I knew his this man was while the smile quickly escaped my face. Faced with this pressure and the thought that surely someone had mistaken by not including the future Hall of Fame broadcaster on the guest list, I quickly stepped aside and allowed the group entry into the party. Needless to say I was soon relieved of my duty as door guard and was sent to the bleachers to keep the real fans under control.

I had spent the next seven years with the team and saw Harry on a daily basis. I even had the extreme pleasure of being the security guard that would sit next to him during his bleacher broadcasts on a number of occasions and attended his producers wedding with the majority of the broadcast team. Despite the fact that Harry would see me every day he would always remember me as the guy who tried to block him from the party that day. He never let me forget that until the day he passed.
