Default New long lasting light bulbs and auto fading ???

Posted By: Mike

I was wondering if anyone knows the effects on autographs with these new long lasting light bulbs (spiral shaped) . I have had auto's fade with fluorescent lighting in the past and before I install in my collection area of the house I wanted to get some opinions. Need expert advise as to how to store auto's. Thanks Mike

It is my understanding that those long lasting bulbs are fluorescent bulbs...I would not use that type of lighting near my collectibles.

Any light will fade autos, the fluorescent will just do it at a faster rate. Just make sure that your items are behind UV glass, or stockpile a 50 year supply of incandescent bulbs and risk the wrath of Al Gore.

Years ago I was buying an Old Judge card of JM Ward. The seller was an old, wise, well respected dealer. He had several Wards. One in great shape I could not afford. The other 2 were equally priced. One had slight wear to the edges and a really strong image, the other had really nice edges and corners, but a weaker image. I asked him which one he'd prefer if it was for his collection... he said it seemed to him that most collectors would go for the one with the nicer edges. He suggested I buy the one with the stronger image. All of these images will fade. The one with the stronger image will last longer. That is the one I now have.

I'd store that stuff so it is not exposed to light. Putting it behind UV glass or UV film, or both, is a start. Putting stuff in dark storage boxes is better.

There was a guy who sold a series of reprinted programs for the World Series, or most of them. I think his name was Opie, but I'm not sure... I have some somewhere. Anyway, what he did was archival, in a way. One day those old programs will deteriorate into dust. The reprints will last a hundred years longer. Toward that end, it would be really good if the Old Judge images could be stored digitally... those cards will be gone one day.

Has anyone experienced any fading from displaying vintage cards in SGC or PSA holders for extended periods (any UV protection from the holders)? I usually keep mine in a dark drawer and just take them out occasionally to show someone. I'd love to frame some of my favorites but I fear they will fade if I leave them hanging on the wall for years.

Despite the minimal cost it would incur to add UV coating to their cases, neither PSA nor SGC include UV coating in their cases.

All my cards are stored in a closet with the doors closed when I am not in the room. Anything hung on my walls has UV glass in front of it. I've seen some people's collections badly deteriorate when left out in the light.

I agree on the slabs, the grading co's should add UV protection; it's somewhat shocking that they don't actually.

some light and some products more than others. The only safe course is to store the cards in the dark and display scans; if you display items they will fade. You notice that museums do not leave prints up for extended periods even with the best possible conditions for display. The autographed displays in my office are photocopies; the real items are stored away properly.
