Mel caught in high school and semi pro ball... He tried out with the Giants as a left handed hitting catcher. Mugsy felt that his size would be a detriment so he began schooling him on how to play the outfield....

Is that cut between the Mel and the Ott? I do recall reading that the wife of Mel Ott would truncate Melvin when autograph requests were made.

I have seen full "Melvin Ott" signatures on checks, but there was always a cut between the first and last name.

Yes, I read that Mrs Ott for whatever reason would indeed cut the "vin" off of Melvin and tape it back together and send it back "Mel Ott"..after reading the article, I inspected it closely and strongly believe it to be a Mrs Ott special indeed
