Hi all,

This photo was a “throw in” in a recent auction that I won.

Comparing the uniforms to the Hall of Fame uniform database, the years I’m thinking are likely 1936 or 1937.

I'm also guessing by the age of the gentlemen, that these are likely part of the coaching staff.

Maybe Joe Cronin 3rd from the left?
Herb Pennock on the left?

Any thoughts?

-Tom

Definitely Pennock and Cronin, almost certainly late 30's.

The guy second from left is probably Tom Daly who was a coach with the Red Sox throughout the 1930s and 40s.

edited to add: probably not an old timers game as this is pretty clearly Spring Training in Sarasota looking at the grandstands. The picture is a shot of the Red Sox coaching staff.

edited a second time to add: I would almost bet it's spring training 1939.

I think Dan has it nailed. Looking at my 1936 Batter Up Red Sox edition, Daly and Pennock are coahes and Hugh Duffy was added later. I almost thought the 2nd from left was Duffy Lewis but that would break up the Manager and coach lineup. Nice photo.

Edited to add: Duffy Lewis was a coach with the Boston Bees (Braves) in the late thirties.

Dan - how in the heck did you recognize the grandstands as a spring training site in Sarasota?!

I admit that I don't post a lot here, but I do spend quite a bit of time lurking - and I must say the knowledge here never ceases to amaze me.

Thanks for all the help!

-Tom

Tom, The Red Sox are MY team so I've seen, and owned in the past many photos of them from Spring Training in the 1930s. It's almost the first thing I recognized were those wooden grandstands with the half oval openings in the back when I saw your pic (Which is great btw).

As stated before, this appears to be spring training and not a old timers game. I think another dead give away is that the bats the 2 men are holding appear to be fungo bats backs up the fact that they are coaches and probably spring training as was mentioned previously.

Dan,

Being a Red Sox fan, you might enjoy this wire photo. Of the two photos in the lot, this is the one I wanted.

L-R Russell Rollings, Denny Williams, Kenneth Williard and Ira Flagstead. This was taken March 15, 1928 in Bradenton, Florida.

Denny Williams is a super-tough autograph. Despite Flagstead's death in 1940, I have seen many examples, but he is also still tough, although not in the Denny Williams sense. There is a Net54 lurker who is related to Flagstead who will undoubtedly love to see this photo! Sily me, Tom, it's you !!! Thanks for sharing!
