Home Run Kisses back survey

I was reading the SCD big book today and the section on Home Run Kisses mentioned the different back options. The book mentioned blank back, ad back, and Bardell Sepia backs exist. The SCD book seemed to imply that the blank backs were the most common.

My question to the board is what HRK backs do you have in your collections?

I happen to own 7 Home Run Kisses, and they all have the "Bardell Sepia" backs.

I've only got one Home Run Kisses card...and it also has the Bardell Sepia back.

my Heitmuller has an ad back, Bancroft has a Bardell sepia back and this one.....has nothing on it...but I am not sure you can count it as it's a bit different than any other known HR Kisses card....Also, for some reason I have seen more Heitmullers with the ad back than any other card......that's just my observation and others might have seen something different

Leon, my Heinie Heitmuller is the one with the ad back, and I too had noticed when you see a HRK w/ an ad back it tends to be Heitmuller as well.

On a similar note, in the 1912 Zeenut set I have seen more Otto Auer cards with the Zeenuts ad back than other cards in the set. Anyone else notice this?

As I suspected, I believe the Bardell Sepia San Francisco logo back is far and away the most common back. The next question is of the remaining 2 types of backs, ad backs or blank backs, which is the most difficult to find?

I agree with your observation regarding the Dutch Auer 1912 Zeenut having a high frequency of the advertising backs. I suspect that his card may have been printed in sheets with the ad backs. His card is the only ad back I own.

I had an Izzy Hoffman HRK, sold it herea year or so ago. I think it just had the Bardell pallet.

I have only one HRK now, Pop Dillon, and it has the Bardell pallet.

Out of 11 1911 ZeeNuts, one has the advertisement back, Page with Los Angeles; 10 have a blank back.

Only have 1 1912 ZeeNut, it has a Bardell pallet.

Frank, what advertising is on the back of the 1911? Is it the Collins stamp like the one below or something different?

It looks just like that one on the back of your 1912 Auer card. I don't recall ever seeing that Collins McCarthy stamp you've just posted. Nice, Rhett.

I own 2 HRKs: 1 with just the logo and 1 undetermined back: the card is so trimmed that it may have had the logo at some point.

I own 2 1912 Zeenuts: 1 with just the logo and 1 with the complete ad back.

I have owned 3 HR Kisses..only have one now - Tozer and they all had the bardell pallet.

I have one HRK--Flater, which has the Bardell logo. On a side note, I have two 1911's with the J.J. Collins stamp like Rhett showed ( Smith, LA and LaLonge), and seven 1912's with the premium ad (Lober, Nagle, Page, Durbin, Baum, Swain and Schmidt). My 1912 Auer does not have the ad. And I have a 1912 Brashear that has an interesting purple ink stamp that reads "Prizes given for these pictures--Ask about it at the Terminal News"

A quick count of the Home Run Kisses still in our collections is as follows:


44 with the "larger" Bardell Sepia logo
(a smaller version logo can be seen in the 1912 Zeenut set)

4 Advertising backs

1 Blank back proof

Perhaps Mark Macrae can chime in on this topic?

Looks like the Bardell Sepia is by far the most common back, and the Ad backs are quite a bit tougher to find. Other than the proof and the skinned back example, does anyone have a true, blank back Home Run Kisses card?

Do blank back versions even exist or has the guides incorrectly listed the blank back confusing them with the 1911 Zeenut issue?

On one of my 7 Home Run Kisses, Duth Auer, the ornate border design is visable on the back bottom border. None of my other Home Run Kisses has this unusual printing charactersitic.

I just checked Lew Lipset's The Encyclopedia of BASEBALL CARDS Vol 2 Early Gum & Candy Cards. Lew writes, "The cards are not dated and most are blank backed except for the logo "Bardell Sepia San Francisco" written on what appears to be an artist's pallette. Some cards are found with the following inscription on the rear, Save HOME RUN KISSES Pictures for valuable premiums. List will be issued July 15, 1912 COLLINS-McCARTHY CANDY CO. San Francisco, Cal."

After reading Lew's description, I can see how the person who wrote the introduction for SCD's Home Run Kisses section must have mis-read Lew's description.

You are very new so leniency is given but this (front page threads) isn't really the place to be asking to buy cards, in general. I understand this is a thread about them but most buying, selling and trading needs to be done in the BST area.
