Default 1938 Chicago Daily News Cubs Set w Original Scrapbook

Anyone familiar with this newspaper photo set issued in 1938 by the Chicago Daily News? It is housed in a scrapbook that was issued by the newspaper for the set. Includes a newspaper page explaining how to use the scrapbook. There are 25 player photos glued into the book. I have been unable to find a checklist to determine if this is the complete set. Looks like the photos were issued on a series of Saturdays in 1938 with two or more each week. Keys were Dizzy Dean, Gabby Hartnett, Billy Herman, and Tony Lazerri. Any info is appreciated.

That's great. I love newspaper issues. Looks like they used TI photo pack images. I have never seen that one before but I have seen similar books for 1959 Baltimore Colts and a 1950s Cincinnati Reds issue.

I note that one of yours says "alco-gravure" on it. Looks like photogravure rather than standard newspaper printing, which is consistent with many supplements. Online, I found that Alco Gravure published a weekly magazine, so my guess is that these were parts of a weekly supplemental magazine to the newspaper. I have seen several similar boxing pieces, both as part of publications and as inserts. Here is a set of Gillette premiums of Max Baer

I don't know anything about that set, but it's pretty cool.

I have seen these before. They show up on eBay infrequently. There is also a White Sox set that looks identical. I always seem to miss the boat; I find them after they're completed.

Pretty sure I have the White Sox version of this set. I can post… when I remember where I put it!

Interesting bio's of the players.

Joe Marty "Raw Boned"

Jack Russell "A.L. castoff"

Tex Carleton "Lanky, sallow faced"

Dizzy Dean "Barefoot cotton picker".

It's also interesting that the players ethnic heritage is mentioned many times.

How times have changed.

That's a cool looking set! I have the Cubs 1932 team issue photo pack which is somewhat similar. But it does not have a cool scrapbook to go along with it.
