Default Vintage Quotes Trivia

This thread will not cost you a dime, but you will not get a card in the mail either.

To participate, just post a prewar quotation uttered by an athlete, but do not reveal who said it.

You may also provide the answer to any previously posted quotation.

The satisfaction of stumping our panel of experts is worth the price of admission.

To get the ball rolling, let's start with this one

"I couldn't hit an elephant's ass with a bull fiddle."

Babe Didrikson Zaharias

I will have to find a good quote.....but a funny one was a young teen friend of my daughters. She was on the volleyball court when another team player was chiding her to play better (she was already close to the best on the team). When yelled at to play better she said "hey, I am just trying to make it out here" For this young girl to say that at the time she said it was quite funny. Ya had to be there. But I will find a quote and post later....

I need to dig up a good quote; I'll post it here when I come up with one.

If that is a new quote, Spaeth is the answer, but you have misspelled it.

No, it's a vintage quote...though I have heard the same thing uttered by 'several' different players in similar circumstances.

The difference on this particular occasion was who said it and to whom he was responding...very specific moment.

"Ruth's balls get smaller faster."

The answer to what question and who said it.

It was Walter Johnson being asked to compare Ruth to someone.

"What?"

This was the response Miller Huggins received after blasting his lungs out for the very first time at his star right fielder.

Supposedly, it took Huggins several minutes to finish his part of the conversation.

Peter - I have remembered that one with a chuckle since reading a bio on Heisman years ago!

Another case of over-statement, perhaps-

"Gentlemen you are about to play football for Yale. Never again in your life will do something so important." Tad Jones

That one I knew and yes, it's a wonderful quote. I think it was before the Harvard game. The Game as it is still called, although now that is beyond overstatement.

True. While I have three degrees I would have probably never been allowed to even look around an Ivy campus. I do love the Ivy League though. No level of college football is pure or probably ever has been but I want to think that they do things a little better than most?

They can afford to given that they couldn't beat most Texas high school teams.

I know they don't draw as well as Texas high school football! Those
Friday night Ivy games shown on NBC Sports draw very small crowds.

That's right Peter. Here's a different player quote.

"All us Youngs could throw. I used to kill squirrels with a stone when I was a kid, and my granddad once killed a turkey buzzard on the fly with a rock."

I replaced the player's last name with "surname" so as to not hand it to you.

OK, I went back and replaced the word "surname" with the players actual name. You should be able to guess it easily now...
