Default T206 Johnson portrait - closed $2K+

Posted By: steve

Last night on ebay, a T206 Johnson portrait PSA 5. Jeesh, so this is now a $2K+ card in a nice EX 5 grade - wow! I was going to make a push up to $1800. Cashing in the year long change cup won't help much anymore.

Good to see prices still on the rise. Bummer to see prices still on the rise.

Steve.

Steve, the 6 has recently gone over 4K! And be thankful you weren't the Memory Lane bidder in November of 05 who, according to vintagecardprices.com, paid $2546 for the PSA 5 version.

Is Johnson's card catching up to Ty Cobb's in value?

And where does that leave Matty and Cy? Falling behind?

If it was to be... Would the consensus put Honus at 1 or 2?

I would put Honus at number 2...

Cobb should stand alone at # 1

It really seems like the T206 Evers portrait has been increasing in sales lately...seems it would be higher on the list.

ummm, well Evers' portrait card is "on the rise" only because it is one of the tuffer portraits to acquire (see Ted Z's post), and NOT because he is becoming a more loved HOFer...

And I guess the thought is Jimmy Collins would also fit in at #20.

The list does need to take in account differences in poses. While the Mathewson and Johnson portraits perform extremely well, the Cy Young action poses coninue to sell for a premium over both Mathewson and Johnsons action poses. And the above mention of Evers portrait has a lot more to do with rarity then popularity. Lajoie's portrait is starting to get up there in price too now days.
Edited to add- I was looking through VCP and the last Collins in SGC 40 sold for nearly 130.00. Thats stronger then a lot of the others at the lower end of the list Dave

please note-

just to clarify, Jay's list above was put together by him, as a personal ranking based on desirability & toughness for T3 HOFers...

i was merely using this list as a jump-off point for the discussion of T206 HOFers. obviously T206 has many different HOF poses (some tuffer than others).

but i do feel this list can be used as a basic "guide" for ranking the desirability of vintage HOFer cards.
