Default One of the Greatest Type Collections Assembled

-The Leon Luckey type collection-

As a type collector I will occasionally view Leon's Collection sold at Heritage on August 13th, 2015 for inspiration and enjoyment.

617 lots of some of the most incredible type cards put together in one collection, imho could not be duplicated today no matter how much money one has. An incredible collecting feat.

For newer members who aren't familiar with his V1 collection or have never seen it all in one place, here's the link below, its a whole bunch of eye candy.

https://sports.ha.com/c/auction-home...21913-interior

Many members here have a piece from that collection and Leon has repatriated many of those cards back to his V2 collection. Here's one from that collection, other members may want to post theirs.

Thanks for posting Phil! I still have a couple of Leon’s cards from probably a decade before he sold it off. It’s an amazing collection by a righteous dude!

I could not agree more. This one made it into my collection . . . Thanks to Leon. Note that it was an SGC 1.5 at the time. Scott

A totally incredible collection. So many awesome and super rare pieces. I am having a blast going through the auction. The auction occurred just as got back into collecting. I wish it was a few years later…

Here are 4 that I have, although we have many more in common. Some lucky dude will soon own the Cy Young Ghost Mullaney Multi-Strike, which I consigned to memory lane.

I bought a card from Leon years ago, but I don't think it was really part of his V1 collection so likely doesn't count here. It was this very cool miscut E90-1 Groom where you can see a sliver of the card that was next to Groom on the sheet.

I have the Heritage catalog for the auction of Leon's V1 collection and will often leaf through it even now. He had one card that I really need but will likely never own. If was the Victory Hooks Wiltse Jersey City team card. That's a one of one and I need it for my Jersey City team set.

Always impressed by that catalog Leon.

I don't know where it is now... but the mere recollection of Leon's assemblage of cards gets me to thinking about T231 Fans... Home Run Baker.

What a bunch of ball cards. Well done, Mr. Luckey.

And those E221 team cards... wish I could have found one of those, back in the day.

I once was an aspiring type collector… that was my ultimate goal but I had no idea how many issues there really were!!!! Leon’s collection was amazing he got so close! I think this dots Miller blank back e92 is my only card from the collection.

I, too, have saved the 2015 Heritage auction catalog for the sale of Leon's fantastic first type collection. But, you don't need the Heritage catalog to see it because Leon makes both his present and past collections available via the "VINTAGE LINKS" section of this forum, and I have referred to it many times over the years. Here's the link to it: https://www.luckeycards.com/personal.html

I was thrilled (and still am) to win these 5 cards, including 2 cards for my Jennings back run, in the Heritage auction:

Rice version, 1922 Haffner's Bread, 1922 Keating Candy, 1922 Witmor Candy Type 2 (vertical back), 1926 Sports Co. of Am. with ad & blank backs. Also T216 Kotton "NGO" card of Hugh Jennings. Also 1917 Merchants Bakery & Weil Baking cards of WaJo.

Does anybody know who won the 1915 W-Unc Jim Thorpe? I've been waiting for this card to re-appear ever since this auction.

Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe Yogi was right because it was deja vu all over again for me seeing your remarkable type collection again.. But remember you did the noble thing. Education should take precedence over, perhaps sadly, cards.
I recall how delighted I was to land the E92 Crofts Red Davis, and I am certain that that card now resides in the proper family. And, of course, the '38 Goudey JD was, If I recall correctly, purchased by you by Full Count in about '97 or '98.
Man, you had some cards!

This was my haul from Leon's auction. I've since sold a few of them, but kept most. Definitely a great collection.

Didn't get back into the hobby until 2017, so I missed this.

I guess if you were ever going to sell a collection, the pinnacle would be to have an Auction House sell ONLY your collection and name the auction after you!!!

Awesome collection Leon...you truly are LUCKEY!!!

..Rumor has it that" Leon Luckey" is just a trade name . I have it on good authority that his real name is ( ..DRUM ROLL HERE ) : Giandomenico Fotcha Galoot.

Yes, the Davis has been reunited with the Miller, Bemis, and Bescher and few other red family members. As recently posted, the E78 Young is also with them.

Super Great card! I love that set and hopefully, one day, I will own some of them. The Thorpe will likely be out of my league considering how many players are interested in it. Would love to know what it would sell for today.

Hank, my card is the only example in SGC's pop report, and I don't see any from this set in PSA's pop report. Trying to search for these cards in Scott's/The Collector Connection's archives was anything but "a piece of cake" for me - I gave up.

Brian, were you able to find these cards by clicking on this link? I sure wasn't. Maybe it's because I'm an old fart whose PC skill isn't so great.

Hi Val, Scott's link took me to a page that showed "W-UNC" for a specific 'Non-Sports & Comics IX' in the browse section, which was not an accurate auction selection. Under this "Browse" section I dropped down and changed the selection to 'All', and that did the trick.

Exactly ... choosing 'All Auctions' in the drop-down did the trick.

Here's the Wajo (https://thecollectorconnection.com/b...x?itemid=23324) - looks like there were 19 all told, 7 of which were listed as 'New Discovery' (6 new + 1 duplicate), and 9 as 'Only graded Example'
