You misread my P.S. Jerry and I were looking at one of the Huggins & Scott Lots and I was asking whether he was successful in winning it. Sorry for being too cute.

Where's the T210 Stengel? I know it's been posted before somewhere but always like seeing it.

Unless I am completely outside or hovering above my rocker, the E254 of Kelly is not the HOF'er Joe. Or is it? I think my rocker is not quite as reliable at identifying HOF'ers as it once was.

You are correct. The colgan is "Jack" Kelly (Kelley), not Joe. Compare:

On that C-46, Joe Kelly bears striking resemblance to Joe Torre.

Brian and Steve great observation. I have documented a couple other incorrect players id's on the Colgan's as well but never picked up on that one. I have a number of C46's too but not Jack Kelley. The question is did Jack Kelley ever play for Toronto or did Colgan's also make an identification mistake. The two Kelleys do bear some resemblance. Another error in listing (but not by Colgan's)...the Colgan's Hinchman below is listed as Harry in all the price gudes but is actually brother Bill Hinchman.

Hopefully I will not offend anyone by using the scan of the Am. League Pub. Postcard as I believe that it is owned by a board memeber. Just email me if you would like the scan removed. The Colgan's is mine.

John, Jack Kelly never played or managed for the Toronto team during the time period Colgans were made. Obviously, the Colgan Gum Co. intended to make a card of Joe Kelley but accidently used an incorrect photo. There are numerous examples in the Colgan set where they used wrong photos...

Murray for St. Paul is actually intended to be James O. Murray but they used John J. (Red) Murray (of the Giants) as his photo.

Jordan has 3 cards in E254. Two were supposed to be Timothy J. (Tim) Jordan (Brooklyn & Louisville), while the one picturing him for Atlanta should be Adolf O. (Dutch) Jordan(also in T206 Southern League set) but they just used the same photo for all 3. I still need the E254 Atlanta but here is my E270 Red to show the mistake...

There are other examples of errors that are known but those are two good examples. I personally believe in these instances it is more important to try and decide who the company was trying to depict on the card, as oppsed to who they mistakenly did picture. In the case of the Kelley card, they were trying to depict Joe Kelley so it should be considered a card of him with a mistake in photo. Same could be said of Yum Yum Anson (Williamson pictured), E97 Cy Youn (Irv Young picture) etc, etc. I don't know that these anomalies are as in as high a demand as the players other cards picturing the correct player, but they are by no means considered to be strictly cards of the lesser known player.

Could you possibly take the Zeenut Thorpe out of its holder and make a nicer scan of it? I sure would like to make a copy and frame it for my baseball room wall.
Thanks.
Glen

We've had two different opinions - I want to make sure as I'm very interested in this item if it is the HOFer. I want to make sure I didn't just make a big mistake (eBay Item #230187570853). If yes, I hope Legacy Sports Rarities will agree and issue me a refund...

The picture sure looks like him and I believe he was the manager of the team at the time - correct?

Please let me know...thank you all. I need some more opinions. I would like to see a picture of Jack Kelly as a comparison - please help.

I think the E254 Kelly Toronto is Joe Kelley, the Hall of Fame player.

In looking at a 1910 Spalding Record, I see only one Kelley playing for Toronto, no Kelly.

This image is from the 1910 Spalding Guide, and the photo in the middle of manager Kelley is the same as the image on that C46. That C46 is one mixed up card, name spelled incorrectly on the front, correctly on the back.

Frank.

I can't for the life of me remember what pics I posted to convince myself that the Kelly Toronto Colgan was not Joe. Comparing the C46 and the Colgan one would conclude they are not the same. (Where is our attached, unattached lobe expert when we need him )

I will say that in 1912 Joe was only 41 years old. The C46 Kelly/Kelley looks older. The Colgan Kelly looks the right age.

Well, the Colgans people obviously intended the card to picture Kelley for Toronto, however they used the wrong photo. This card is in the same grey area as the E97 Cy Young that obviously pictures Irv Young but based on the team and name they had intended for the card to be Cy Young. I consider the card to be that of Kelley but with the wrong picture used, but it is equally as valid to say the card is Jack Kelly and they got the wrong team (he was with Newark)

I appreciate the insight. I'm satisfied the item was intended to be HOFer Joseph Kelley even though the picture may not be. I won't have to hassle the dealer for a refund now. It will also give me a new type in my HOF set as I already have C46 represented by McGinnity and Fan Craze by Hanlon & Flick.

I look forward to learning more about the Colgans set. Tom B mentioned a 1910 advertisement in another thread I found on Colgan's. Couldn't find a picture, his email kicked back - please forward if you can help. I did find Rhett's pics of the Colgans Tins - very neat. Thanks.
