Hey all-

I just bought a huge original Cracker Jack collection locally here in Missouri. Mix of 120+ 1914s and 1915s. Average grade is VGEX with some EX and a few less. Cobb was a 1914 EX. I will be posting these here later in the week once I decide how to market them. I probably will send them all to SGC.

I too live in Missouri (Atlanta) and am elated to hear of your good fortune. Not a whole lot of finds I can recall from the Show Me State, it's good to know there are still a few left to be uncovered.

Just as an FYI,

Apparently the dealer who had a store for years in the North Kansas City area (can't remember his name) sold his entire inventory a year or so ago to Scott Gaynor, and he allegedly had both Cracker Jack sets. I have been told the entire inventory went for around 100k, and there was much more than just the Cracker Jack sets. I was surprised that a long time dealer could sell out for such a low price, but he was not really in tune with the current market, graded cards, etc.

Was this the "factory" sealed example that recently came to light? Also, not to hijack this, but being "relatively" new to the hobby, I am confused as to why people call these experiences "finds". I can see why it was a find in the old days, but do people actually find anything now? I would think that these people are contacted somehow and told about these items.

ps, that's not to take away from how cool this is. it's just a question on terminology.

It's a "find" because he's announcing it. Just like Columbus "discovered" America but there were Indians already here. You have to let people know about it to get credit for a "find" or "discovery".

Hey all-

I have been gone all day and will be gone this evening. I would love to fill in this amazing story how I found these. Ed, I am the guy you wrote a letter for a couple of years back.......friend of Randy Cook. I will post details of the lot. It was a mix of both years....mostly 15s and all were oringnally collected from the candy. No factory cards. I think that is much cooler anyway. The cards a surprisingly VGEXish some better some worse. Backs clean (except caramel staining of course with the exception of the 1915 Matty which has small written line on back. I will try to post some scans as soon as I figure out how to do it on here. Some of the low pop cards from 1914 are nice. Ghandil and Marquard push VGEX+-EX. The Cobb is 1914 and VGEX+ could go SGC 60 in my opinion. The Wagner is VG+ish, Johnson is VGish, no Jackson, alot of nice VGEX+ cards like Evers, Bresnahan, Plank, Collins, Speaker,etc......Commons are nice too. Not too many in the G range and none lower than good. I think mostly will grade 40s,50s, and maybe a few 60s. Will give details later when I have some more time.

At the top of the page are the Forum Rules. At the bottom of them it explains...but a few things to remember. They need to be .jpegs, under 128kb each in size, and no weird names for them...with any periods, hyphens, or spaces...if you have trouble email me and I will help. You can also send me the .jpgs to my email and I will do them for you. I will be out a fair amount today doing family things though...

If you use imageshack or other resources be sure you click the preview before you post. Sometimes the scan can come out about 2 feet long and sort of mess everything up.....there are many other picture hosting resources you can use...find one that works and go for it. I still use the temp files of Net54, but to each their own....good luck....

Finds are a funny thing. Whenever a collector hears about a find in close proximity to where he lives he always wishes he was the one who got the call. I was once consigned a collection of about 150 tobacco and E-cards that included a very nice T205 Hoblitzell "no stats." The family who owned it lived less than half a block from me. I passed the house hundreds of times, but how could I know it was there until I was contacted? For all I know there are 1000 vintage cards in somebody's attic next door, and they will call someone in California to fly in and buy them. I live in an area of 19th century brownstones with many families who have been living in the same place for generations. But what do I do, ring doorbells and say I would like to rummage through your attic? Finds are really just the luck of the draw.

So if I clean their attics and find a steamer trunk filled with Old Judges do I tell them what they are worth, or do I offer to take the trunk down to the dump and dispose of it for no extra charge? And what if I clean a thousand attics and find nothing? That's an awful lot of backbreaking work.

Adam- It's not going to happen anyway, and I know if I ever did find one I would do the right thing. And talking about steak- my wife just broiled a delicious one bathed in teriyaki sauce, cooked in our crappy oven (they don't allow propane grills in an apartment). But it sure was good.

I just wanted to extend a GREAT THANK YOU to Dave Foreman and SGC. They handled my cards very professionally and the turn around time was above and beyond what I had expected. I thought the grades initially were tough on some and alot of the cards look very nice considering the technical grade given, but I admit you guys are atleast consistant and the most accurate in my opinion. This is one of my many reasons I look to purchase prewar cards in SGC holders specifically. Eventually I will turn my entire vintage collection into SGC slabs time permitting.
