Default Pre-WWII Cincinnati Reds

Hello all. My name is Joe and I am a lifelong Reds fan. I'm originally from Cincinnati and now reside in Indianapolis. My wife and I go to Reds games as often as possible. We'll be in town next month for the Padres series.

I joined Net54 in January 2010, but this is my first post. I've always been a lurker, but I decided I needed to start posting.

I started a new project. I decided to make a team of what I consider the All-Time great Reds players Pre-WWII. I used 1942 as the cut off date. Players could have played after 1942, but they had to have began their career prior to 1942.

After coming up with my team, I am now going to try to get a card of each players in a Reds uniform. It's going to be tough, but I am looking forward to the challenge. I have only picked up 2 cards so far, but hopefully I'll be able to add to my collection slowly but surely.

I have a very, very tight budget, which will make this an ever more daunting task.

I didn't mean to ramble on, but that's me and my new focus in a nutshell.

Thanks,
Joe

Are you including all Reds teams, going back to 1869? That might be pricey. But if you start in 1901 and you aren't too worried about them wearing a Reds uniform on the card, you could populate most of the all star team via fairly accessible sets like the t206's, E121's, and the Goudeys.

Yes, I went back into the 1800's. I made a 28 player list/team. 12 pitchers, the starting 8, and then 1 back up for each position player. Out of 28 players, only 6 played their entire career pre-1900.

Bid McPhee, Tony Mullane, Will White, Frank Dwyer, John Reilly, and Arlie Latham.

I know if I land any of those, they will be pricey. My plan is just to save what I can and try to cross them off the list slowly.

Thank you. I certainly will. As cards begin to come in, I will definitely update everything.

Would this be the correct forum to post all of that in, or am I in the wrong spot?

Unless I am mistaken this is the perfect place for it. I would look to add any new pick ups in the monthly pick-up threads found in this thread.

Darren- Thanks man! It's nice to be in on a vintage board. I have 2 incoming, I'll post names once I have them in hand. I never like to count a card until I actually have it.

Jon- Thank you. As new cards come in, I will make sure to use the pick-up thread as well.

Joe,

Bid McPhee (N172) and tight budget are usually not used in the same sentence. The Mullane (N172) isn't that bad. I'm not sure what you're going to do for Will White.

Can you provide the entire list of players on your "All Reds" team? It sounds like a fun project.

Along the way you may get side tracked and really like a particular card set and start collecting your "All Reds" team and "that" card set. It's just a natural hazard of collecting card board. Good luck with the endeavor.

Joe, I too am a lifelong Reds fan and I have been collecting Reds pre & post-war cards for many years now. I think your project sounds like an awesome idea.

Would you mind sharing your list of the Reds all-time greats? How did you narrow it down? What was your criteria for the list?

Fred- True enough. I found a couple of McPhee prices and I may never own that one. I appreciate all of the information. This site has such a wealth of knowledge when it comes to vintage that I am sure it will be a great resource.

Chris- Very cool. I am excited about the project. I used a few different things. I used OPS+ for position players and ERA+ for pitchers. I looked at WAR and OBP. Then I just looked over their stats as a whole. Players had to have a minimum of 5 years with Cincinnati.

Here is the list I made:

C- Ernie Lombardi (1932-1942)
1B- Frank McCormick (1934-1945)
2B- Bid McPhee (1882-1899)
SS- Tommy Corcoran (1897-1906)
3B- Heinie Groh (1913-1921)
LF- Bob Bescher (1908-1913)
CF- Edd Roush (1917-1926)
RF- Ival Goodman (1935-1942)

Starting Pitchers
Eppa Rixey (LH) (1921-1933)
Adolfo Luque (RH) (1918-1929)
Bucky Walters (RH) (1938-1948)
Noodles Hahn (LH) (1899-1905)
Tony Mullane (RH) (1886-1893)

Pitchers
Paul Derringer (RH) (1933-1942)
Pete Donohue (RH) (1921-1930)
Johnny Vander Meer (LH) (1937-1949)
Red Lucas (RH) (1926-1933)
Will White (RH) (1882-1886)
Bob Ewing (RH) (1902-1909)
Frank Dwyer (RH) (1892-1899)

Bench
C- Bubbles Hargrave (1921-1928)
1B- John Reilly (1883-1891)
2B/SS- Hughie Critz (1924-1930)
2B/SS- Lonny Frey (1938-1946)
3B- Arlie Latham (1890-1895)
LF- Rube Bressler (1917-1927)
CF- Cy Seymour (1902-1906)
RF- Curt Walker (1924-1930)

The years are the years they played for Cincinnati. I'm sure that there are others who would have a different list and that's fine, but this is what I came up with and I think its a solid list.

Although not a card, this is just as old as Leon's but a little more reasonably priced

Why not make two columns-one for your "want" list and the other for the ones you've found and acquired. As you get more, you can move from the left to the right. We can check on your progress and help if we have any dup's.
Good luck, Len

Scott- Glad to finally be here and be active. I guess I just got so used to lurking that I didn't think to post.

Wounded- That is awesome. I would love to have something like that in my collection.

redmansam- I will do that as things begin to come in. At the moment, I don't have any of them, so they're all wants.

Ken- That is incredible. Very nice piece. I'm sure something like that doesn't fit into my budget. lol

If you do an internet search for this woodcut, there may be a good chance that you'll find it available. It's usually priced for less than a $100.
I was lucky to find this one in a small Antique shop on the way to Cape May, NJ

Good luck in your endeavor,

Great Idea for a collection. A few easy ones you could get cheap and are usually
available on EBay:

1939 Play Ball cards of Frey and McCormick and Derringer
1941 Double Play card with both Derringer and Walters together

Best of luck,
- Dave

Joe - Welcome to the board from a fellow Reds fan and collector. This is a great site to learn vintage and look at some great items as well as find some of your wants on the BST.
My best, RC

Great pick ups Joe, thanks for sharing those.

I'll echo what the others have said, keep your eyes on the B/S/T, it is a great place to find things for your collection. Look forward to seeing your progress.

Dave- Thank you for the heads up. I have a Walters and McCormick incoming. I'll check out the Frey and Derringer Play Balls.

Richard- Thank you. It's always nice running into more Reds fans. You are right on, this definitely is the place for vintage. I do a lot of reading on here paying attention to the tips of the members. Net54 is a phenomenal resource for a collector to learn about vintage.

Clayton- Thank you. I am glad you enjoy seeing the progress. I will continue to update every time something comes in. I check the B/S/T daily. That's how I got the Bescher. There are several other Reds fans here and it seems you have to be quick to get the Reds. haha

After a lot more thought and deliberation, I think you made excellent points, Mark. I have went back and started making some changes to my team. Bid McPhee is the best second baseman for the team, but that's not something I can afford. So I am adjusting the team fit what I could put together.

I am not trying to make this easy as much as affordable and attainable. 1900 is probably going to be a better starting off point which leaves me trying to decide on whether to keep Noodles Hahn and Tommy Corcoran.

I have finished up for now. 1900-1942 are the years I am using. One day I hope to be able to afford the older, nicer, and more expensive cards. Right now, I need to go with something I can actually do. I tried to still make it challenging but attainable while keeping integrity with the team.

Hey Joe,
I've got these cards if you're interested:
1920 W514 Rube Bressler and Pat Moran (I think you might need this World Series winning --- albeit fixed --- manager).
Both raw and ungraded. Check the scans. Both backs are clean.
PM me if you are interested.
