Default SGC Grades trimmed W514's?

Posted By: Rob

I was wondering how SGC determines how much border there should be to these strip cards, as with this Joe Jackson on Ebay shown in the 1st picture, came from an auction shown in the 2nd picture. There's no doubt this is the same card, with the mark below the eye being the identifying feature:

Came from this strip here:

The Jackson card was HEAVILY trimmed on the right side. Seems clear strip cards that would grade 5 or 6's would get trimmed 8 and 9's by SGC. I was wondering should people pay the big $$$ for such high graded strip cards? The Joe Jackson card is listed at $8900.

I don't agreee it is the same card from the strip as in the slab. If you look at the graded piece, there is a slightly darker spot next to his eye, off his face, that you do not see in the strip. You can see the other dot under his eye, on his face, in both scans.

I just looked at scans of 4 different W514 Jacksons and they all have the spot below eye.

Being some what an expert on the set and knowing the history of the strip from REA, i can say without a doubt that is NOT the same jackson. The one in the 88 holder came from lelands. Usually they need to see the dotted border but it just depends on the card. I have most of the set and have handled every card from the set many times over.

I have been told by SGC that strip cards need to be full size, with some of the dotted cut line showing (that is if there was a dotted cut line on that particular issue). I sent in two W551's that were full size, but they would not grade them, due to the dotted cut line was not visable. However, I see SGC graded strip cards all the time that are obviously cut too small that are graded, so it was somewhat frustrating. Heck, a fellow board member recently posted a pic of an Orange Border Mathewson with the border cut off that was an SGC 10. SGC does a fine job with vintage cards, but their inconsistent grading of strip cards needs to be fixed, IMHO.

I thought AGC stopped assigning numerical grades to strip cards and will only give them an AUTH grade. This would make the most sense since these are technically trimmed cards.

Nonetheless, does appear the heavy trimming on the right side was done to get that Nrmt-mt 8. PRO graded cards won't have as much trimming.

That's a beauty though. My Jax received "Auth" I think because it was trimmed by a rodent and his offspring, though grateful it wasn't another counterfeit. Just thought of a new topic; "Can the grader receive rabies from contaminated old cards?"

Many months ago, I recieved this back graded very high. Expecting "Auth" as usual, I was elated. As none of our 1960's cards got near this score from SGC. It is cut directly along the blue border.

Two completely different cards. Of that I am certain. The registration on the "Sox" insignia on Jackson's uniform is visibly different.
