I ended up with a couple of 19th century lots and the Square T204 Ramly Lot 155). I think Julie owes me a BIG dinner w/drinks after all the running up I did and being the under-bidder on many lots of hers. I really wanted the Oshkosh Team Cabinet, but could not pull the trigger for twice of what it went for on Ebay (underbidder again). I guess the cat is out of the bag on how rare 19th century items are... LOL I like how REA compared many lots to being as rare if not more rare than ther T-206 Wagner.. I thought us collectors who knew the hobby spoke like that...

I was shut out as well - I was hoping to split a few lots with a friend, but we got topped sometime north of midnight.

I got tired and went to bed. The guys on the other coast have a tremendous advantage for late night bidding.

Oh well, I have a stack of catalogs that I have not even begun to look through yet.

however if the winner of lot #'s 108, cabinets, or 920, cameo pepsins, visits this board. i would be interested the charlie weber, sioux city cabinet as well as the owen williams davenport cabinet in lot #108. and in lot #920, either of the cedar rapids pins of donnelly or kennedy. email me if you wish to defer some of the costs of your wins.

JC--gimmie a break--you told me if you'd gotten home half an hour earlier, you would have bid 6000 on that card on eBay (the Oshkosh)--but you didn't so I got it for 3! (or less--one snipe!).

I couldn';t BELIEVE what some guys paid for some of my cards.. fu**ckin incredible. But most of the OJs went for less than I paid...I don't understand--it's my favorite set. On the expensive N162s, I just about broke even. The CJs--I nearly dropped DEAD; of course, I bought them a long time ago. The Hassen triple Folders, too---8 and 2 graded lots--SO MUCH DOUGH...

I'm watching a gorgeous DBD (from Target) on my fixed Toshiba...hot dog! Sounds's good, too. After trying 2 from Amazon and one from Barnes and Noble--all stinkers, and 3 rented ones, I'd about given up.

Julie- the prices on OJs confirmed my post and that of another poster a few weeks ago who said that the prices on OJs are dropping. I put some bids in on the cards but forgot all about many of them being yours. They were certainly nice cards but the final bids did not surprise me in light of recent trends. Congrats on the other prices though.

I think the perceived "weakness" in OJ pricing is due to the cards not lending themselves to condition and slabbing mania. This makes comparisons difficult. The Anson did pretty well; so did the McPhee and the Hoy. Anything with a robust, clear photo with good contrast will command a premium, perhaps higher than the last trade.

Weakness in pricing, if there is any, is manifest in poor looking and overgraded cards.

there was one lot of 5 OJs, including a rare and nicely photographed Hoy, a great photo of Hamilton, and a very nice Thompson--and a couple more--that I paid an AVERAGE of 2.5 for, and --someone on this board, I'm glad to say!--got them for a little over 5K. And then a couple of Hassen triple Folders, commons--go for God knows how much, because PSA was nice enough to slap an "8" on them...I hate those grading companies.

So OJs are coming down, huh? They're still my favorite set...

I guess my SGC 84 Dummy Hoy, which went for between 3-4K, put to rest the idea, now in the price guide for 2 years, that near-mint Hoys go for 6,500...I never did pay anywhere near that much, and I didn't expect this one to fetch that much.



AND HOW DO YOU THINK I FEEL< MM< HAVING TO SELL ALL MY CARDS? DID IT EVER OCCUR TO YOU THAT I MIGHT MISS THEM A LITTLE BIT? GO SIT ON THEM; IF YOU DIDN'T WANT THEM, WHY"D YOU BID ON THEM?

I've noticed the trend that some are referring to as a softening of Old Judge prices. I think that what has happened is as more people got into collecting these cards more people gained an appreciation for what was scarce and what was common. The days of all Old Judges of a particular condition trading at the same price are gone. Common cards, the California Browns of the world, will trade for less than average. The scarcer cards will trade for premiums. What we saw on some of the lots in Mastro and REA were common cards getting below average prices. Does that indicate a softening of the market-no. What it indicates is an increasing sophistication of the marketplace, which I think is a good thing.

I eecked out victories for the T205 Bender (PSA 7) and T202 "Birmingham" with Walter Johnson (SGC 86) both nice cards for my sets....
I don't think the SGC T202 I got was Julie's.
As I (seemingly) always do after these auctions I am asking (pleading with?) the winner of the 36 WW gum cards to sell/trade me the Joe McCarthy card.

Jay- You could very well be correct. I only dabble in OJs and as such generally have no clue (other than a fading memory) which OJs seem to come up more than others which I rarely see.
