Default Another long time collector passes away

All,

With a very heavy heart I wanted to tell the board that my father Duncan Preece has passed away. He was a collector and frequent convention attendee since the 1971 Detroit shows. He lost his first collection (purchased as a kid in the late 1930's) to the trash bin when my mother threw them out because she didn't want her kids to play with dirty old cards and wanted them to have new ones. He stopped going to conventions in the 1980s and just enjoyed the collection he had. When he was collecting, it was the golden age, everything could be had,for a reasonable price.

Default Cards

When my dad started collecting, the conventions were selling Ruth Goudeys for $1.25 and Gehrigs were $0.75. My dad liked on the best condition. In the mid 1970s he turned his attention to 1950s cards where Aaron rookies where $15, 1952 Topps Mantles $35 and 1953 Topps Mays at $10. He likes getting a number of each card. He put everything away in a chest. No idea where it is today.

Very sorry to hear about your Dad Pat. My Dad was born in 1931, and grew up through the same time period as your Dad. Your story about your Dad and throwing his cards away reminded me of how my Dad used to punish me back in the 70s. He would put all of them in a big green trash bag and act like he was throwing them out, and would hide them in the garage.

Patrick, I extend to you my deepest sympathy. It's so hard to lose your Dad; I've been through it.

Your father and I may have brushed shoulders at those huge Detroit shows. I attended from 1972 through 1976; they were usually one of the highlights of my collecting year.

Thank you for honoring him. I salute your Dad. As you truly said, that WAS a very special time in the adult card collecting hobby.

May Jesus comfort and help you and your family as your grieve and do what you must do. ---Brian Powell

Default Recapturing memories

Been putting off going through the paperwork and keepsakes when a loved one passes. I have not begun to look for the "card chest" as my dad called,it. He kept for his personal collection a number of Goudey Ruth's, Gehrigs, 52 Topps Mantles, Aaron rookies, Clemente rookies all in beautiful condition. He always liked multiples of each. He always paid up for the best conditions and if I find the chest it will be interesting to see if mint condition back in the 1970s meant mint today. Many bittersweet memories

Even if I found the chest, I am not so sure I could part with it. Sorry for your loss.
