High enough that a dozen broke collectors can bid early and say they were outbid.

The auction isn't up yet; they are only showing two preview items on their website. There's a link on the non-sport side but their site is located at:

Would anyone rather have this over a plank?

I love cards as much as the next guy... And have spent some money since gettin into the hobby but I just can't wrap my mind around spending 6 figured on a piece of cardboard.

I would rather have this than a Wagner. I just love the back story on the Doyle.

Of course I can't afford it, but when I do spend a large amount on a card, I justify it by saying that I can get my money back when I sell it. Hopefully these cards will continue to appreciate.

Some people simply don't understand... this card is the equivalent if there were 6-8 Derek Jeter rookie cards.. where he was listed as playing on the Mets.. then fast forward 100 years.. and in the year 2115 we are searching for those 6-8 jeter cards where Jeter is listed as a Met vs the normal Yankee..

the Doyle Natl error is a great card.. i have never seen this card sell for a loss.. expect big numbers on this one.

Joe Doyle (he of the 22-21 career W-L record) is not the dead ball equivalent of Derek Jeter.

I would much rather have a Wagner or Plank. Those guys are great Hall of Famers. This is a variation of a common. There was a thread a few moths ago, show your cards rarer than Doyle. Cards posted there sell for a fraction of this card.

The Wagner is the entire hobby.

Understanding, of course, that most of the folks that own a Doyle already own a Wagner. They're completists, and money is often not an object.

I can't think of (m)any collectors who could only afford one of the cards and chose the Doyle over the Wagner

After the reading the auction description in the REA preview, does anyone else find it strange when they list the other known examples? It states that a BVG 4 (VG-EX) exists, previously in a SGC Authentic holder. Odd??

Anyone have any info on this?

Tony

Usually the "typo" errors do nothing for me but this ones special...that it was caught so early on and only a few survived. Plus how it was discovered gives it a special allure. Great card.

Correct, this was a average player being mistaken for a non HOF star that shared the same last name.
I closer analogy would be a David Rollins card being mistaken for Jimmy Rollins.

I agree that this is a cool card with a nice pose to boot. I don't know that I take for Slow Joe over a nice Wagner because that card is so iconic, but I would have to think about it for Plank.

For those of you that don't like this one, do you also dislike the Magie?

Personally I find the story behind the Doyle N.Y. National card more interesting
than the Wagner. There are only 6-8 of them known so this is the card that keeps most people that own a Wagner from completing the 524 card set.

It's even hard to find good scans of the known examples, the Pelaez and Conlon Doyle N.Y. Nationals both have the same mark on the backs, this same
mark can be found on some of the Doyle N.Y. cards indicating the they were
in the same sheet position after the Nat'l was removed.

Magie is special because of corrected misspelling of name, OF COURSE. However, there are, what, around two dozen other misspellings (including poor old Harry Lentz/Sentz, who isn't even close) ........... so why only Magie/Magee ???

Doyle is a classic, but I'd be happy at 523

Expensive typo, I don't get the appeal but that's just me. No t206 set is complete without a Wagner, but only a master set requires this card in my opinion.

If the hobby would just work together to eliminate this stuff it would be a beautiful thing. No one should bid on this card or cards like it and everyone can just enjoy their T206s and spend money on actually valuable cards of Ty Cobb and Cy Young.

Defining value by rarity alone seems circular to me. It seems to me there should be something inherently desirable about the rare item in order for its rarity to augment its value.

The only T206 of Wagner, one of the great players of all time? Yes. An error card of Joe Doyle? No. IMHO.

You rarely get a chance to buy a Doyle. Wagner's come up about twice a year.
