Here's a card that caught my eye: http://cgi.ebay.com/1911-T212-Obak-Ten-Million-Very-Nice_W0QQitemZ260297358508QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item 260297358508&_trkparms=72%3A1240%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C 240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

I have a few Obaks, and I like the guy's name, so I thought I might try to win this auction. Then I noticed that the shipping was $18.00, and that doesn't include insurance. So I wrote to the seller, simply asking why the shipping is $18.00. Here's his response, in full: high reserve.

In other words, "shipping" is his name for a simple surcharge to which he feels he is entitled because he just is. No relation to shipping cost.

It puts me off. Am I making too much of it? What do you gents think?

Given what the item will go for the shipping cost is irrelevant.

"Then I noticed that the shipping was $18.00, and that doesn't include insurance"

In his last line in the description, he states shipping & insurance is $18.00
Considering it costs almost $4.00 to insure a package for just $201.00
The final bid of this card would eat away at a good chunk of that $18.00 fee.
Though I do agree it seems a bit high on the surface. He could have justified it
moreso by stating $18.00 for insured registered shipping.

From an outsider's viewpoint, that's one of the most beautiful cards I have ever seen. What is its approximate value? The background and, of course, the player really combine to make this an attractive piece. Add to that the fact that I used to live in Victoria.

So the message is, don't sweat the [relatively] small stuff. Right?

The cost of the shipping may very well be in line with the price he is asking as i did notice he does include insurance in the price. It was a terse answer but i do think the price of shipping is relevant no matter how much he is asking. I'm not sure what this card would go for but hopefully that is not a "surcharge" he thinks he is entitled to.

Ten is a very popular card, but I don't think it's any rarer. If $18 includes insurance, then the shipping and insurance is not out of line for what the final value will be

So if I'm doing the math right, this is about a $1000 card?

Jay,

Thanks. I was just curious. By the way, what an odd price discrepancy on the SGC 80. I wonder what happened there.

I respectfully disagree with those that feel $18 is appropriate for shipping/insuring this card.

This is simply an attempt to put $10-$12 in his pocket at your expense.

Sure enough, the last line of description DOES say that insurance is included. At the bottom, under Shipping and Handling, it indicates no insurance. Makes a big difference!

Bucs,

I don't think $18 is too ridiculous for insured shipping. If the card does in fact sell in the $1000 vicinity, insured shipping would be close to that amount, as opposed to the $6 you seem to be saying it would cost. Then again, perhaps you are thinking of the cost it would be when shipping it registered, which is cheaper and more secure, but always takes longer. Is that perhaps the method you were thinking of?

Now it is irrelevant. Ebay pulled the listing.
