1948 Signal Oil Baseball Card Set

Greetings, does anyone know if this set is scarce? I have seen a few for sale on ebay and was wondering if anyone has any info on this cool looking set.

I have about half the set, and I don't believe I've paid more than $10 a card, although I don't have Martin or Stengel. Based on those prices, they can't be that rare. They certainly don't go for any more than 1948 Bowmans or 1948 (actually '49) Leafs. I'm not aware of any short-printed cards ...

Hi Chris, are you aware of the two back versions of the Billy Martin card in the Signal Oil set? One has DOB 1921 and the other 1928. I believe the 1928 is the scarcer version. Anyone know this for certain?

I've never heard of the variation, but I've never been much of a variation guy. To tell you the truth, I'm not sure I've even read the backs. I love the '48 Signal Oil cards for the color photos on the fronts, which I believe are the first real color photos ever used on a card. Certainly nothing matches them until 1953 Bowman came along ...

you can't always use price as a guide to rarity. Some sets are rare but not in demand hence prices remain low. I don't think this is a common occorunce among Vintage sets but it does exhist. The 1941 DoublePlays are a good example. Very reasonable price for Vintage cards and many HOF'ers.

I agree with you, Richard. Clearly, there are far more '48 Bowmans and '49 Leafs than '48 Signal Oil cards. I have done dozens of eBay searches for the Signal Oil cards and I'm lucky if a couple cards from '48 show up. The '47s, which I don't collect and don't really like, seem more common, yet demand higher prices. Most of the time, there aren't any '48s. But for some reason they've never really caught on. I recall going to card shows back in the 70s. It was much easier to find 1952-53 Mothers Cookies back then. Now they go for twice what Signal Oil cards goes for ...

Chris, yes it is very interesting to see how collector demand changes over time. Some sets that were not too popular back in the 70's are HOT today and in great demand.
