Derek, I was considering jumping into that Perkins cabinet last night as well but I wasn't sure how they ascertained that it is a ball player without being able to identify who it was. Perhaps it is just my lack of knowledge, but how do they know it is not just a random person off the street?

You are correct...it could be a joe schmoe...there are certainly examples of Perkins cabinets out there that fit the bill.

I have two other Perkins Studio Cabinets from the mid- 1890's of Orioles players...Hughie Jennings (my avatar) and Kid Gleason. The Jennings is interesting because it is the same image as that used on the 1894 Betz Studio Cabinet featuring the Orioles players (and Alpha Photo Engraving set). I still haven't made the full connection between the two studios yet - Betz and Perkins to see if they shared images.

Anyway, after looking at all the player images I could of Orioles players from that era, if it's not Joe Corbett, then it's probably Joe Schmoe.

maybe Orioles 1954 will answer your question. I’m also interested in knowing.

I also thought of taking a shot at this nice looking cab but deferred. Written on the back was "Joseph Battin 1871 Cleveland" whom in no way looked like the young fellow on the front. Still figured he was a ballplayer. Will be interested to see if his identity is confirmed.
