Default 1931 W517 color variation checklist?

So does anyone know if a checklist with all of the color variations for the 1931 W517s exists? Was every card printed in every color? Are certain color variations rarer than others?

I know cards were printed in three card strips - but if one wanted to create a master set were is there a way to know every variation? (For example, I saw a yellow Left grove on Ebay a couple weeks back, but didn't bid because the card didn't look quite right to me and I'd never heard of any of these being printed in yellow - and at least two other cards would need to be in yellow for it to be real. Right?)

Just curious to know how much is know about this set.

Cheers,
Patrick

The print on that Grove card was brown, not yellow. It appeared that the card has been stained yellow at some point in time. I had the option to buy that card several months ago and stared at it for a long time before deciding it was a brown tint - not yellow. The back also had a yellow stain to it.

So that's what it was! I had never seen a yellow W517 card before and thought it just looked wrong so I passed. Thanks for clarifying that. I was wondering if there was another whole color I didn't know existed.

Thanks,
Patrick

This is sort of apropos and will fit nicely in my obscurity/proof/origination type collection.....Interesting how they note that the number is just pasted onto the photo.....

Very neat Leon,

The size and thickness vary slightly with the different colors. I still need a few for my set (five I think, plus the few team variations). Most of mine were acquired from one high school principal last summer. He sold a complete set individually, most all of which were this color (thick cardboard):

I'm planning to measure each full color variation later today and add to this thread. The SCD indicates all cards are 3 x 4 or thereabouts, which is close, but not correct for all.

There are other variations within the set as well as those shown above, although none of them are missing #'s--they are mainly cropping variations. Look at the difference in space between the top of Bing Miller's hat and he border on the two cards (also note the # has been knocked out of place slightly on the one. I know there is a similar variation on Gehrig as well but i have never thoroughly studied the cards to know if there are others.

Here are some W 517 mini's, including bright red. Also, the Vance Strike Out does not have a number, I assume it's a W517 but don't really know

Nice cards David W.

Hi Rhett,

I have two Bing Miller cards, the one you posted on the right, which is definitely cut short, and one I bought (from you?) that was an upgrade to the other. I did not notice the card number placement before you mentioned it. I think I bought the Cuyler from you too. Thanks

Here is the W517 Terry in yellow and the original art for the card. Note the stain where the # sticker fell off the artwork. Judging from the Miller I think they needed better glue!

Also seems appropriate to note that the W517 and PC Back Exhibits share the same artwork with the same handwritten captions on the cards common to both sets:

And that the same pattern is repeated with a series of entertainment cards:

And check out the Eddie Collins, Bing Miller and Charlie Klein on this 4 on 1: Same art as the W517:

And this Cobby strip from the PC Back art:

All these sets are as interrelated as an Appalachian mining town.
