Default Lets play WHATS IT WORTH?

So this base sold at a local auction tonight. It was supposedly stole off the field after the Red Sox won the pennant in 1967. It came with a note from the guy who bought it from the fan who ran on the field and stole it when everyone was celebrating(theres actually a youtube video where you can see the fan run onto the diamond and steal the base).

Well it ended up selling tonight for $5,200 WITHOUT 18% BP or MA tax

I asked two other collectors before the auction what they thought it was worth, ranged in the $1,500 to $2,500

So what do you guys think it's true value was?

Brock,
I believe in a larger catalogue auction, in the right setting, it would sell for possibly double that, FWIW.

Red Sox collectors are pretty hard core....

Surprised by that. After it sold, I told one major auction house what it brought and they laughed at the price.

Also even though its been 40 plus years, couldn't the red sox force them to give it back considering its stolen property and the letter admits it.

It's worth what someone is willing to pay, so I'll guess, um,...$5,200.

+1
It always comes down to two motivated collectors (and, ahem, a few spirited shill-bidding friends).

I don't know if that note would be documentation enough to lay out 5200.00. It seems a bit suspect, it was written a week ago specifically to lend credence to the base and the guy chose to use two different pads to write the note on and initially talked about a ring. Why not simply write it on a single loose leaf page and write it out correctly. It just seems too odd to me, pass.
