Funny how sometimes chat board talk finds a way of becoming real life (or something like that). Julie and I were grumbling about the inequities of ebay, that a buyer couldn't retract a bid within the last 24 hours but a seller could whisk an item away at a moment's notice. Well, last night I was about to get a really sharp 64 Topps Stand Up Clemente for a great price when with 90 seconds left, the seller pulls the plug, cancelling bids and ending it because he didn't like the selling price. Ironically I had just sent this same seller a money order for a Koufax and Banks 64T Stand Ups, so I expressed my email opinion to him that although ebay permitted this, I thought it sucked.
Weird...

I hate that seller's can do that- there should be some kind of rule that an item can't be removed at least 24 hours before the auction is to end. If the seller consequently made his reserve or minimum bid higher, than so be it.

and by mentioning their name on boards like this. I also like to send an email to the seller with a link to our discussions - just to let them know that their sleazy practices may have saved them a few bucks on one auction item, but it's also cost them a lot of future customers.

Scott, couldn't have said it better myself.

Collectors sometimes forget that we don't need them - THEY NEED US!

You picqued my curiosity, so I checked it out. The seller said that he cancelled the auction (at the last second) because he changed his mind about selling it. What a hoot! Ebay should be horse-whipped for the crappy job they do of policing their auction. My concern is that ebay has been around so long now that a lot of sellers are figuring out where all the loopholes are (areas ebay will turn a blind eye to) and are having a field day.

I have had so many unpleasant dealing recently with ebay and both buyers and sellers that I have basically stopped buying on ebay, and I'm saving my really nice stuff for auctions like Mastro, etc. Unless ebay gets a little tighter, I think they will eventually turn into a cheap flea market.

I think the worst thing is trusting someone, having gotten a few good deals with him, ahd then all of a sudden therre's a big squirt of tobacco juice in the middle of a T206 that showed a very faint stain in his scan... my FEELINGS get hurt! Why, he wouldn't do that to ME, heh, heh.

It can work the other way, too. Verkman sold me a trimmed '33 Goudey (G-O-U-D-E-Y is part of his phone number, you know?). For 2-3 years, I'd look at his catalogues each month, and buy nothing. Then he came out with this HUMOUNGUS list of M101-2s--I wanted the Joe Jackson. They told me over the phone that it had DEFINITELY not been trimmed, but there was a crease just above his hairline that went all the way across the card, which someone had done a pretty good job of getting rid of. I bought it. I had my army (Mark Macrae) here 1/2 hour after it arrived, and Mark said it was fine, not overpriced, not trimmed etc.

So you shouldn't give up on someone just because they rob you blind once, either.
