The 2nd is at 55 posts, so let's ring in the new week with this toughie I just overpaid for!

1940 Hughes Frozen Confections Sacramento Solons Gene Handley
(I'm hoping that the scan is terrible, and the card is actually much nicer, but we'll see)

Picked these up over the past few weeks and just got around to scanning them last night. The Brown is a Cycle 460.

Jason, congrats on that Handley card! Did you ever think you'd see one of those?

I never did think I would!
and I guess that is reflected in the price...sad.gif

BUT! I got it, and now the family collection has a better chance of being complete someday. There are still a bunch of Hage's Dairy cards of Gene and Lee that will also be extremely tough, but I had it in my head that this one was going to be the toughest on the checklist. Looking forward to getting this one in hand and seeng if it's not better than this scan suggests. I will scan myself and share once it comes in...thanks for the congrats.

Jason, I wouldn't worry what you paid for it as you may never see another one of those again or at least not for a very long time. From the scan it looks like an acceptable condition card to me...I looked on ebay at the other ones from that set and I know you paid more for it than the others sold for, but I'm guessing the guy who lost out is bummed about not getting that Handley...and someday he'll probably wish he'd gone higher.

that's how I chose to look at the situation. These 1940s and 50s PCL regionals like the Hughes and the Hage's Dairy are super scarce, and it's not like I am trying to hoard them, I am just trying to get an example of each of my cousin's cards for the family. And from everything I have heard, the Hughes issue is extremely tough.
This one is officially out of circulation! happy.gif

Combine this with an original wire photo of Gene a couple weeks ago and I've had a good December!

Hmmm. Another "Big Glove" sighting in the T210 above, like the Dots Miller "Hit It To My Left" card. That is a really, really big glove. I have a photo of Female Giants in which a player is wearing a similarly oversized model.

Thanks, guys, for the positive comments. Have wanted a CJ Walter Johnson for a long time. I think I got off easy, the economy being what it is.
Scott: I won this card in the recent Memory Lane auction. Their description was terse; I don't have any knowledge of its provenance.
Jim B: You've been posting some pretty wicked cards yourself. I took a run at that Roger Connor card myself but bailed out early in the game. Had seen it in Chicago and was majorly smitten. By the way, one of my many pleasant memories of the recent National was sitting next to you on the bus from the Mastro live auction at the ESPN Zone back to the Rosemont hotel. We each had pictures of our card collection loaded on our iPhones which we shared with each other. Just a couple of high-tech ex-12 year olds getting excited about cards. It was very cool!

I'm just waiting for Jeff to post his T206 Lajoie Uzit in PSA 8.

(All kidding aside, that is a terrific card. Maybe you should make it your avatar.)

Not to burst your bubble, but your cards have writing on their backs. SGC 20 Fair at best.

Just kidding. Phenomenal acquisitions.

had an opportunity to hold it, smell it, and scan it...seems real, if not water-damaged and possibly trimmed (measures about 1/8 inch short t/b and L/R), with creases that the EBAY scans did not reveal. But it is scarce as all get out, so I will keep him and name him George. If ever one presents itself with a nicer image, I may bite...but good for now. Next step is to see if SGC will slab it for protection and presentation!

Yes Kevin I have often wondered how they would grade these as they were issued with either Cromwell or Webster or other name on back. They may nix it for that but who knows. As long as I own them, we will never know. I wouldn't have these slabbed if they offered to slab them for free. Dan.

Joann:

It seems like it would be more effort to keep that glove on than it is worth. The gap on the side of his little finger is huge.

Leon:

The pose was the first aspect of the card I noticed (this is true for quite a few of the T210's I have acquired so far.) The red border is quite bold, as well (even more so in person.)

You are def right about that Jason. That's what makes me wonder about these big gloves - why someone would wear one or whether it was worth it or not.

It's interesting to me to wonder whether they represent a transition in gloves concept from "protect the hand" to "assist the catch", or at least show that someone had started thinking that way.

J
