Growing up I thought that I’d never own the cards I have today! I would go to the local card shop each week and spend about $50/week. I would still go to the card shop into my late 20’s! I really didn’t have a collection that had a focus. I just would buy whatever looked cool. I always loved vintage baseball cards. The way the looked compared to modern day cards were fascinating to me.

Almost two years ago, I came across Orlando Rodriguez on Instagram. His collection was amazing. He helped me with refocusing my collection. I stopped going to the card shop. I didn’t spend the $50 each week at the card shop. I sold off my whole collection. I started first by selling the cards I could live without. That was easy. But it was hard at first to sell rookie cards of the likes of Pete Rose, Nolan Ryan, Ernie Banks, Hank Aaron, Pete Maravich, etc. Eventually I sold them as well. I started over. It was hard.

I started to then focus on Ty Cobb. I tried to buy the best card that I could afford with the money I made off of selling my other cards.

My first Cobb was purchased in June of 2017. It was the T206 Piedmont Portrait Green Background SGC 35. So, in a little over one year and 3 months I have gathered these 7 Cobb’s pictured here.

My next Cobb card will most likely be an E95 or a T227!

Oh and by the way, Thanks Orlando. You have made all of the difference!!!

I just checked -- it's the only one graded by SGC and PSA, is that possible? It's from the Bill Mastro collection which was auctioned off in Legendary. 0_0

Yep, I've only seen one other and it's a beater.

100% 1907, the individual player cards were released the following year.

These Cobbs are amazing. Thanks for sharing. I only own two Cobbs. Neither are spectacular, but I'm happy with them. I have a t-206 Red background. It has a notch out of the side and paper loss on the back. The other is a graded e90 American Carmel. It is graded poor by SCG. The red Cobb may be my favorite card.

I would post picks, but I don't know how.

Default What is this Cobb?

Need some help. Posted this yesterday on the main thread. I know the 10 card boxing are W-UNC Blue Boxer from the 20s. These were included in the collection with many other "W" cards.
I can't find any of the baseball anywhere. I went through all 27 pages of the Cobbs the members have up and couldn't find it. Any help would be appreciated. Would love to get it graded but don't know what to put on the submission slip. Thanks.

I recognize them (just barely). Here is link to a brief N54 discussion of them from a decade ago. I believe Boxingcardman seen on the thread is still on the board as Exhibitman...he might have some good info for you.

Don't know if in a catalog or not but it's a postcard, the individual player ones issued in 1908 are in Burdick's as PC770.

Come on Ryan, surely you can do better than that crappy-looking Croft's Candy card!

P.S. - Congrats on your super-nice group of Cobbies!

I try not to look for Cobbs anymore as I could spend a ton on them - I have 3 ... apologies for the other guys in the pics!

Would love to get a CJ at some point, though I think my pennies would go toward a Shoeless Joe, as I don't yet have any cards of him.

Hi Tony

Is it just my observation, or are the majority of the PIEDMONT 150 green Cobb's always off-center (vertically) to the top ?

Here are my green Cobb's...…

Hi Ted. You are correct. Green Cobb portraits w/ Piedmont 150 backs are almost always found with a bigger bottom border which is why I don't consider them to be OC.

I actually like this look on T206's to tell you the truth, but hey that's just me. A nice bold colorful image with perfect registration is what's most important IMO.

Great cards, guys.

Tony/Ted, the Green Cobb 150's also have bolder/deeper green ink, I find.
