My favorite is the 1888 Goodwin Champions (N162). It's brilliant color, artistry,
and the variety of Sports champions of that era is outstanding.

And, I must add the mysterious Fred Dunlap card and it's "ghost".

I know, I know... it's not pre-war. But I just love the 1956 Topps set - the cool art, the action on every card, the horizontal format... pretty much everything about it.

I only have two pre-war completed - B18 and 1910 Obak. I prefer the Obaks - I like the look of these cards and I really enjoy the fact that it's minor league set.

I think Jim's E93 set might be MY favorite completed set... I never get tired of seeing them. That Matty might be my favorite prewar card, period.

Tough call. A couple of mine have already been mentioned. T209 (Nice group, Brian!)
N162s are tough to beat.

Tough choice. The T3 Turkey Reds would get my vote but I still need 91 of 'em to complete the set. Might need a few decades by the looks of things. Will go with the 1933 Goudey set. It's the set Rob Crumb would have drawn if he were around then. Gotta love it. Hot on its heels is the D304 General Baking set. It left a big hole in my bank account but no regrets. Love it for no other reason than the Mathewson. There's probably no such thing as a "not great" Matty card but the D304 Matty is a Great Matty.

my 1906 W601 Sporting Life Postcard set. 15 of 16 but I consider it complete because no one will let loose of the Detroit card

http://www.freewebs.com/jacklitsch/w601sportinglife.htm

Working on T206 SGC graded. Built the set once, broke it up, starting again. Actually is my favorite set that I completed (minus big 4).

Working on 1911 Zeenuts. Ask this question again a year from now

I lean towards the 1986 Topps baseball set, the player selection, the sharp clean photos, and the black borders make it Oh so tough to find in solid NM. Ive been told that PSA has yet to grade any set above a 9 !, great investment to put away for the kids college

from sets gone by, the t205 set is hard to surpass. The n162 set is a close second with t3s coming in third and Diamond Stars and Delongs rounding out the top 5.

Not complete yet (and probably will never be) but I really like the T205 set. Second place (and this one I hope to complete but currrently I am only at 20%) is the E254 Colgan's Chips set. My dream set would be the N300, but that is definitely a dream unless I hit the lottery. I have a few decent examples except for this one (none graded lower). Look away if you must.

And Ted, if you ever want to trade your Beecher for my Kinslow let me know.

I recently completed this 64 card set all graded either SGC or PSA. 27 of the 64 cards are HOF'ers and the 1921 benchmark crosses over the great careers of so many HOF'ers. Here's a few.

Even the images of the common players look amazing!

Ted,
Thanks for the chance to show these off.

Ted,

Wow those N162’s are amazing, and Jim you need to stop soaking and pressing all of those fantastic E93’s or at least make a few.

My favorite would have to be my T206 set. I have spent a lot of time on it although not complete still needing the big 4, until I can find the right Magie and a perfect priced Plank it will have to stay this way. Even though I could be done I keep seeming to buy more of these cards, perhaps its time to start that super cool 1921 Exhibit set or Obaks??

Here are a few of them…with a link to the rest of my cardboard crack as my wife calls it.

http://imageevent.com/piojohn3/collection

P.S. Leon those are amazing however did you find them all??

JOHN

Thanks for the compliments on my N162's......and I will reciprocate by saying your
T206 Stars are really sharp. Everytime I put together a T206 set, I was content to
stop at 520 cards. On the 1st set, though, I got lucky and picked-up a Magie. But,
back in the 1980's this card was still affordable. I think I paid only 800 for it (in Vg).

Incidently John, if you decide to part with the Lindaman (P350) that you won the
other nite, could you give me 1st crack at it.

My favorite set completed is the T202 set. My favorite even if it wasn't completed is the T202, so my overall favorite is the T202 set. Three pictures in one card is a big bonus.

This card is going into good hands, it was fun while I had it.

I can echo some people here: I'm working on the three sets I think are the nicest on the eyes. T209 Colors, T202s, and I'm furthest along on E92 Dockmans. I love the gorgeous lithography on these, especially the sky in the background.

Definitely my E93s with the T227s a close second. While Jim has the best of the best e93s locked up, I like to think I have some of the best low grade e93s out there with a few higher grades to boot. Here are a few:

OK guys, I modified the term "completed" in the headliner. Near sets and even
starter sets are acceptable....because if they are your "Favorite" set, sooner or
later you will complete them. It's just a matter of "TIME" (and $$$$), and time
is irrelevant to this Forum.

Let's see some more cards from your favorite sets. So far, we have seen some
really great cards on display here....but not enough responses.

So, then I will start calling for 2nd and 3rd FAVORITE sets. After all "SETS-R-US"
and they can tell us a lot about ourselves.

It's a definite toss-up.

Six months ago I would have told you, unequivocally, it's 1938 Goudey. I love the cards, and it's the perfect kind of set for me - challenging to complete, but small enough that it's possible to really get to know every card and its idiosyncracies. For a mainstream set, there's not a lot of stuff known about it, and yet it's recent enough that it's possible to piece together the puzzles yourself.

Today I'm equally in love with a HOF type set I'm building. It's not as cool as some of the HOF sets you guys collect (some of the coolest HOF collectors I know of contribute regularly to this board - Leon, Hal, Mark M, Zach, David, Paul Stewart), but it's still the most fun I've ever had in the hobby.

I'd post some of mine, but they pale in comparison to some of the others here. So here's some '38s. You can see my whole set on my website, if you're interested: www.swingbattaswing.com.

-Al

The set I've been working on the longest is BF2 - I've been picking them up for seven years now and have 80 out of 97. The use of real photos on a variety of color felts appealed to me, and at the time they were more of an oddball item and less widely collected than today.

Man, when I was a teen ager and finished that set, I thought I was pretty hot sh!t. It's still the closest I've come to a compete vintage set. When I finish my 26-27 Aguilitas set, that'll bump the Redbacks to #2.

I don't quite have it completed yet.... 11 in my possession (link provided) and two more on the way (Detroit and NY Natl)....

so I need just 3 more for the set.

All of them will reside in SGC slabs if not already in them.

Out of my current and completed projects, I'd have to say that my d311 set is my favorite right now. Tremendous eye appeal and some great poses. I have 65 out of the 72 total cards in this set so I'm close, but could still be a long ways off before finishing.

e103s, m116s, Obaks, e98s, etc...are some of my favorites after d311.

While not quite "vintage" these two 1949 sets are the very 1st BB cards I collected in
my youth......and therefore, are equally favored as "runner-ups".

These four 1949 Bowmans are from my 2nd set of which 1/2 of the set comprises of
color errors and variations (approx. 120 cards).
