Default MLB Cancelling HOF Game

Posted By: Tom Russo

I know this is slightly off topic but as board members are the greatest and most knowledgeable fans of Baseball and its history, I am wondering what your reaction is to MLB cancelling the HOF game that has been played in Cooperstown since 1939.

Larry,

Not sure what you're talking about. The HOF game that was cancelled was an exhibition game between two MAJOR LEAGUE teams that took place in mid-season. It was not an old timers game.

It was not a game loved by any of the teams or players. A day off in mid-season is valuable. Traveling to Cooperstown would not be high on their list of things to do at that time.

Default MLB Cancelling HOF Game

Actually, I like the idea of a game with former players, even if they are broken down. When I was a kid, I loved going to old-timer's games. In the early 70s, I watched Bob Feller pitch and Joe DiMaggio hit in Angel Stadium. I remember Beans Reardon was the umpire. Before the game I got their autographs, along with a whole bunch of former greats. What ever happened to old-timer's games?

An old-timer's game would go over big at Cooperstown during induction week ...

Yet another sign that baseball is no longer a sport to be enjoyed by the common man. I remember seeing the 1989 HOF game. The Reds didn't bother showing up to play the BoSox, so the PawSox were called in on short notice. For a young Boston fan, this was simply heaven! Kevin Romine was playing catch with fans along the 1B line...just a lot of fun...I would equate it to MLB meeting Disneyland in terms of the happiness the occasion brought to the other youngsters (and even the older fans) in attendance. I'm really sad to hear that news.
