Default Harper's Weekly- Baseball?

Posted By: Thomas

Does anyone know if there are any baseball related articles or advertising in any Harpers Weekly magazines and newspapers? What are the earliest dates I should look and would they be worth pursing? Thanks for any help or direction on this. Thomas

Default Harper's Weekly- Baseball?

Harper's likely has some baseball articles, but they are best know for their woodcut baseball pictures, some which are as large as two full pages, and some which are valuable financially. These woodcuts appeared in various issues from the 1850s-1880s. I beleive that Lew Lipset has checklisted (with dates) the major baseball woodcuts in his Encyclopedia of Baseball Cards.

The potential buyer of complete Harper's Weeklies should also be on the lookout for editions that contain valuable woodcuts by the famous painter Winslow Homer. Before he became famous, he worked as an artist for Harper's. Likely, a search of the internet will find the dates when his woodcuts appeared.
