Default Alexander Cartwright Founding Fathers Sportkings 2008 1/1 auto

His only auto to exist in a sports card and extremely hard to find. $2500 OBO. Also open to trades of just about any kind. Thanks.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I have a few issues with the card, the biggest being that it looks as though the autograph appears to be from a letter press and not an original signature. You can tell from the cut that this was taken from a letter, as opposed to a bank document-as he signed his common "very truly yours" above based on the dips in the "y" at the top of the cut-and hundreds of these letter press exists. Plus, the way the paper the cut is on is wrinkled, it appears likely that onionskin paper was used. Finally, the ink is bleeding and not "crisp". My guess is that you would have a much better opportunity of getting the price you are looking for is getting a reputable TPA to certify the autograph itself.

Thank you for your comments. A few things. The card was originally graded a BGS 9 with a "7" in the auto. I did not like the way the 7 looked so I decided to have the card reslabbed by Beckett in the present holder. The autograph is authentic. I hear you on your letterpress comment but that cannot be confirmed. Furthermore, the "very truly yours" comment is a bit general because your assuming he signed that just about every time he signed his name and I doubt that. However, if he did, perhaps it IS is just above his signature and not in the autograph window shown above. If you do not belive that the auto is authentic, your questioning Dr. Price at SK and the auto grading staff at Beckett.

I think the real question is whether or not this is a letter press signature. A letter press signature is a copy of an actual signature, sort of like an early fax. The signature on this card looks very similar to this letter press signature, right down to the tone of the paper and ink. I think this card contains a copy of a signature and not the original. Have a look:

The paper in your link is clearly different paper than on my card. I'm familier with the letter press copies. I know the authenticity of the card is guaranteed by SK.

First of all, Beckett does not authenticate autographs-they have JSA do that for them, which I assume they did not do in this case. All beckett did was grade the strength of the signature-but they assumed it was authentic-which goes back to the original issue. If you give me Dr. Price's contact, I would be happy to contact him.

You may want to even list it on ebay, and get a quick opinion. I will even make you a deal-post the quick opinion for us to see I will reimburse you the $10 (assuming it doesn't come back as questionable-because you get a full refund if it does) either way-so you have nothing to lose! Ask people on the board, my word is good and you will get paid.

Just saw, this-I think Dr. Price and Beckett must get some things wrong from time-to-time. You really don't think this is real, do you?!

My first instinct was that something was off as well, but I don't have it in hand so I won't say anything either way. Yes though, trading card companies make MAJOR mistakes on occasion. Probably the most famous cut card in history (the Topps 27' Yankees booklet, had to have a handful of signatures replaced because they ended up bad.

Obviously you can't see in your pic, but doing research online, the card does state on the back it is a wife signature.

I believe what he is trying to say is that PSA/DNA provides a "Quick Opinion" service for eBay auctions (maybe others?). It's around a $10 fee for them to look at the eBay auction (which is why he told you to list it). So, I'm betting that's what he's referring to.

If it's comes back authentic (I'm not familiar with the sig so hence the "if") you would be able to send it in for the full authentication service and they subtract that Quick Opinion fee from the total.

List your item for free as a BIN and go to the PSA/DNA Quick Opinion, submit a request for said opinion, then he would reimburse you the fee.

Yes to above , provided you post it and it doesn't come back as unable to determine, as you would be reimbursed your money back regardless.

For what's it's worth to the OP, I would trust the experts on the board with an autograph of this caliber and feel more comfortable with their word than any TPG or trading card company.

I highly, highly trust those in this thread who are concerned and respect their views above all else. And many others haven't chimed in.

Is anyone in this thread interested in the card? Or are you simply questioning it? If it's the later, thanks for your thoughts. If there is interest, then I would certainly be willing to send it in to PSA/DNA.

Wouldn't you have the slightest concern about the authenticity towards this card? At least 3 people came on here about the question to the authenticity.

If it were me, I would like to get that all squared away if it's authentic before trying to move it. If not, you'll even have a worse mess on your hands. If it isn't, you would get a monstrous replacement in return I would bet.

If I knew 100% it wasn't a letter press I might be interested at $1500 or a trade

I'm actually not concerned about its authenticity. I would not have purchased it had I been. However, I'm more than happy to get it checked out by a 3rd party if someone needs it done in order to purchase.

I could go $1750 delivered that's about as low as I want to go for a 150+ year-old auto.

FYI...here is the back of the card...the signature is garunteed. So, if anyone is indeed interested, and they purchase the card from me and the auto is not authentic, you would have a nice pay-day coming from Dr. Price. So, let's deal

I see nothing on the Sportkings website that mentions how they backup their "guarantee".

Also, I'm curious why you removed the card from a slab that was "originally graded a BGS 9 with a "7" in the auto" and put it in a slab that doesn't mention any grades at all. Seems like 9 & 7 would be better than nothing & nothing, but I could be wrong.

Maybe you should have had Dmitri Young resubmit it for you, he had a knack for getting 10s.

Doug
