Default Experts sought for 2008 SCD Standard Catalog Team/Let the flames begin!

Posted By: Don Fluckinger

Hi, all.

My name is Don Fluckinger, some of you know me from my Online Auctioneer column in SCD as well as my regular vintage pieces. I've written the "Web Stuff" column at Tuff Stuff for nearly a decade.

I am also now coordinating content for the SCD Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards, starting with the 2008 edition. The 2007 edition just came out, I had zero involvement with it. While Bob Lemke has moved on to another position--in the coin collecting hobby--he remains my mentor and in close contact with me. I only have respect for Bob, and I can never "replace" a hobby titan like him, I just hope to do his legacy justice with the Catalog.

I'm posting today for several reasons.

1) To introduce myself (hi!)

2) To solicit cheers, jeers, questions, corrections, and suggestions for the 2008 edition. You may post here or you may email me back channel at don@prospecthillpub-dot-com. I am especially interested in sets that are either under-represented (like, we only have half the cards or some fraction...or it's not there at all). While we may or may not follow through on every suggestion, please understand that we will thoughtfully consider all ideas, even when people start their suggestion with "If you could make the catalog more pages, I will be able to line more birdcages next year..." If you email me back channel, it helps keep it out of my spam filter if you put the words "standard catalog" somewhere in the subject line, although it's not mandatory.

3) I'm also looking for some experts in certain vintage sets/brands. I'm looking for people who will answer emails (we don't get many aimed at a particular set, even T206--maybe you'd get one a month, maybe, I'm guessing) from readers, and review the pricing data on that set and next spring, be willing to mark up xeroxed pages from the 2007 guide to suggest pricing updates. We will take that into consideration as well as auction results (online and not) as well as other data.

The following sets I'm especially interested in, but I am willing to consider anyone's ideas.

1. T205 and-or T206
2. Vintage Leaf
3. Sporting News
4. Goudey sets (sport kings, too)
5. Play Ball
6. Bowman
7. Cracker Jack
8. Old Judge
9. E93-E92
10. T202

and finally

4) I am seeking an expert in T206 errors and variations--and how to tell the difference--for an article to appear in SCD en route to what might (or might not) be a new variation on the lst in the big book. If you have some knowledge and 15-30 minutes to jaw with me on the phone, send me your name, phone number, and a good time to call (don't forget to remind me what time zone you're in) and let's talk.

Thanks a lot, I look forward to interacting with you all.

Thanks for coming on our board and explaining the SCD position going forward. I would be glad to help on really obscure issues and I am sure other board members can fill in the more mainstream ones. Good luck in your endeavors.....

As a thank-you for your help, people tapped to contribute pricing data and answer questions get a mention in the book.

Would love to see a little more attention paid to regional sets, and the more obscure/oddball stuff. Needless to say, there are a lot of sets where the guides are consistantly in lala land. It's still one area where the SCD guide is still more complete (in that at least they're listed, with fairly complete checklists) then any online price guide options I know of... so in light of that, it's a real disservice to your product that the prices are so off.

It might also be cool if there was a way to publish twice a year, or come up with some sort of supplimental updates to handle sets with a lot of price movement.

Good luck!

Certainly there are some 1980-2000 sets that can be dropped from the guide to make room for a much more detailed checklist of the N172 Old Judge set. Perhaps checklist by team. Also would like to see some of the H series cards included...and trade cards.

Welcome to the board! And good luck with the guide.

i would have to agree with dan, the OJ section of the SCD standard catalog of baseball card have been quite lacking for some time now. the last time that the OJs were well represented, all variations listed seperatly with description, was in the 1997 SCD. there are many new collectors starting or wanting to start collecting OJs. unfortunatly the information on them is sometimes difficult to decipher unless you have really put an effort into learning about them. also, with the hush hush secrecy addititude that some of the more advanced OJ collectors have, on some points i understand why they keep quite, there are few places that the new collector turn to for advice. expanding this section would surly bring more collectors into the OJ realm. not that i would really welcome more competition on the ones that i am on the lookout for, but the exposure of the set would be nice. also as dan stated, the set could be listed with in more than one way, not just OJs and OJs HOF. it could also list them in ways that they are collected; team, hof, league, spotted ties, year, etc... OJs seem to be collected by many different methods.
