If it happens, lets hope its better than the 2000 NY subway series. The Yanks swept that one without a fight. It would be great to see an all NY series go 7.

Actually, the Yankees own the tie breaker vs the Red Sox so they clinched tonight (up 11 with 11 to go and owning the tie breaker).

Jay Wolt is correct.

The Yankees own the tiebreaker against the Red Sox. However, that tiebreaker is only useful if both of them would qualify for the playoffs anyway - one a Division winner and the other the Wild Card winner. This is what happened last year. The idea is that the extra playoff game to decide who wins the division and who wins the wild card is not worthwhile since both are already in...and may actually hurt both teams if they have to play the playoff game on Monday, and then start a playoff series on Tuesday. Thus there is no 163rd game if there is a tie if both are already in the playoffs.

That was the situation last year.

The situation this year is different. It is highly likely that if the Yankees and Red Sox tie, that only one team will get in. The other team will not be the Wild card winner. This is because the Central teams - Chicago, Detroit, Minnesota, are likely to get the wild card spot and have more than 92 wins. Thus if there is a miraculous tie between the Yankees and the Red Sox, only one team will get in the playoffs - and they would have the 163rd game to decide who wins the division and who goes home.

Thus - Jay Wolt is correct - the Yankees still need either one win or one Red Sox loss to clinch the division.

The tie-breaker scenario may happen again this year, but in the AL Central instead. If the Twins and the Tigers tie with more than 92 wins each (very probable), then the Tigers will win the Central and the Twins the wild-card due to the Tigers 11-7 season win over the Twins.

Twins-Mets had a much better ring to it. Even without Liriano, the Twins pitching is looking tough. I'll take Santana-Radke-Nathan over any other 1-2-closer combo headed into the playoffs.

yep, no bout a doubt it !....Steinbrenner is the winner here.

Ny will not make it past the first round. Pitching & defense
will win the series as always. I detest Ny Yankees, they are almost as boring to watch as the Atl Braves.

can't imagine a less worthwhile event for national TV audiences...except maybe this game where you have to guess how much money is in a suitcase, and there's a bank, and a bald guy, and ...-oh wait, nevermind

Unless you know someone at the MLB front office or higher up in the Mets organization, you aren't getting box seats anywhere near the action. All the good seats get reserved for MLB, the two teams and all the big corporate sponsors. The loyal fans who had those seats all year get pushed back to the cheap seats.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. If you are a loyal fan all year, you should be getting those same seats for the playoffs and WS too. Instead, you are treated like a second class citizen and get relocated to less than prime seatting, no matter how goor your seats were.
