Default The Great Teams of Baseball

Posted By: Joe_G.

I recently picked up an interesting book I believe to be from 1928. The author, MacLean Kennedy apparently had an extensive collection of all things baseball dating back to 1884. MacLean shares his fond memories of watching Tim Keefe, Dan Brouthers, Sam Thompson, etc. MacLean teamed up with the Sporting News to write & publish a 100 page book featuring the 16 "Great Teams of Baseball".

While I won't mention all 16 teams, I will list what they felt were the 5 best hitting teams from 1876 to 1928.

In chronological order, the top 5 . . .

1886-88 Detroit Wolverines
1891-98 Boston Beaneaters
1894-98 Baltimore Orioles
1894-98 Philadelphia Phillies
1921-28 New York Yankees

I would be interested to see if anyone differs with the teams selected. A lot of time has passed since the 1928 writing with much scholarly work since completed. I thought MacLean did a fine job expressing why each team in his book deserved inclusion.

Also, can anyone confirm the publish date (1928?) and whether subsequent printings were issued?

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

Joe

This book was reprinted (I believe) in the 1980s. I have been told that the word reprint is on the copyright page.
