hi, as suggested by Ted, maybe we could do a quick survey, as to how many Piedmont 350-460 Factory 42 backs are out there...i own 2 commons (PSA 2 & PSA 3).

i hope it is ok to include this link, it is from T206 Museum, scarcity list of backs...you will see that they say the P-42, is rarer than lenox, broad leaf 350, and carolina brights among others...

http://www.t206museum.com/page/ch_scbklt.html

lets see what we can find out here. thanks!

i guess whoever is responding should try to approximate how many P-42's they have or have owned, out of how many total cards...for me, i have owned maybe close to 300 different T206's over the last 13 years...so for me it is 2/300.

Chase w/loving cup and Bradley.

edited to say: 1 purchased w/knowledge of the back, one purchased for the player (Chase) and later found out it was rare.

I have been scouring T206 commons for years looking for these and have run across only the Bradley and one other (in horrible condition and sold by me some years ago) whose name escapes me. They are very hard to find.

I have 3 out of about 1000+ that I have handled. I have Smith, Chicago & Boston, Seymour, Throwing & Schaefer, Wash. The Smith is the only one I paid a premium for, the other 2 I got at normal price although I knew they were fact 42's.

I think it would be nice to now which players we have to see if all the 460 cards are covered.

I have 3 out of my current collection of 1000+ T206's.

But, I should qualify this by mentioning that approx. 700 of these cards are Piedmont's.

We had a similar thread on Sweet Cap 350-460 Fact 25.

Here's the link: http://www.network54.com/Forum/153652/message/1126153517/Sweet+Cap.+350-460+Factory+No.+25

Collectors were providing very low counts as well.

They are both pretty uncommon, but not exceedingly attractive because they're just not that exciting.

Piedmont 42s have been picking up steam for the last two years though.

I have six factory 42s, all of which I paid premiums for.
They are:
Wiltse throwing
White Chicago throwing
Sweeney New York
Downey throwing
Griffith batting
Lajoie portrait

I have bid on quite a few that are probably owned by members of the board.

I have one in my collection which I discovered by accident. It is a SGC 70 Wagner Bat on Right Shoulder. So far, the data obtained for the "Super Set" has 44 different cards with Factory 42 backs.

I have one Piedmont Fact.42 out of over 500... Seymour Throwing.

Interesting thing, for me, was that it was obtained in a lot of 10 T205/T206 cards on eBay about a year and a half ago.

The seller knew enough to advertise the Broadleaf T205 back but didn't mention the Piedmont Factory 42 T206 so it was a nice surprise to find in the lot.

Jim, my mistake. It is a Lajoie with bat. Your Wagner (no B) factory 42 has got to be an extremely rare combination. If you get a chance, I would love to see a scan of your Wagner. Mine is a Piedmont 350-460 factory 25 Lajoie back ,Lajoie front with Wagner no B

No piedmonts. But I do have this:
OVERALL CHICAGO NATL HANDS WAIST SWEET CAP 350-460 FAC 42

People said it was a million dollar wound. But the government must keep that money, cause I ain't never seen a penny of it.

I actively collected this back for a couple of years.

Currently have:

Chase (With Cup)
Lajoie (With Bat)
Leifield (Batting)
Manning (Hands Above)
Murphy (With Bat)
Steinfeldt (With Bat)

Had and sold:

Pelty (Vertical)

This back appeared on 0.1% of the cards in my ebay survey, i.e. 1/1000. Similar to Black Lenox and Broadleaf 350 in terms of difficulty. Tougher than Carolina Brights; easier than Broadleaf 460, Brown Lenox, Drum, Red Hindu and Uzit.

With the cards so far only 5 of them are from the 460 only series. Any possibilty those 5 belong in the 350/460 series?

There are 18 of the 350/460 series not accounted for yet:

Burch, Davis, Donlin, Doolan,Doyle, Elberfeld, Johnson, lake, Leach, Leifeld, McQuillen, Mullin, Rucker, Street, Tinker, Wilhelm, Willis (bat), Willis (throwing).
Are there any more out there?

Lee,

You raise an interesting point. However, I think there is little chance that the five 460-only subjects confirmed on this thread with Piedmont 42 are 350/460. For example, I have seen Bergen (Catching) with the Sweet Cap 460/30 and Sovereign 460 backs and those backs are ONLY possible on 460-only subjects and the six 350/460 superprinted subjects (of which Bergen is not one). But it is clear that Piedmont 42 is MUCH easier to find on 350/460 subjects than 460-only subjects--suggesting to me that ATC possibly stopped printing this back shortly after it released the 460-only subjects.

If I have understood every post here correctly.....I am amazed how many P460/42
cards are from the 460-only series relative to the total cards reported here.

Here are the ones from the 460-series.....

Chase (trophy).....2 cards

Bergen

Kleinow (Boston)

Schaefer (Washington)

Smith (Boston & Chicago)

Wiltse (portrait/cap)

And, I will add the Latham (Thanks to Brian W) from this series.

Ted,

Here are some other 350/460s that I recall seeing with Piedmont 42:

Cobb (Bat Off)
Johnson (Hands at Chest)
Lake (No Ball)
Leach (Bending)
Matty (Dark Cap)
Rucker (Throwing)
Snodgrass (Catching)
Stahl (Glove Shows)

On the other hand, I have never seen any 460-onlys beyond the handful that have already been noted.

Piedmont 42 is definitely more difficult with 460-only.

Interestingly, the opposite is true of Black Lenox--that back is much more difficult with 350/460s and much easier (although of course still difficult in an absolute sense) with 460-onlys.

Brian,

Very interesting. If I'm not mistaken, all of yours are 350/460 except Bergen (Catching), Kleinow (Boston), Latham and Smith (Chicago & Boston). Moreover, each of these four was previously mentioned. So it would seem not only that 460-only subjects are exceedingly tough with Piedmont 42, but that where they are found there is concentration among just a handful of subjects.

Updating Ted's 460-only stats we have:

Bergen (Catching).....2 cards
Chase (Trophy).....2 cards
Kleinow (Boston).....2 cards
Latham.....2 cards
Schaefer (Washington).....1 card
Smith (Boston & Chicago).....2 cards
Wiltse (Portrait w/Cap).....1 card
The other 41 460-onlys.....0 cards

I also find it interesting that with the possible exception of Bergen (Catching) these 7 are among the more difficult 460-only subjects.

Scot
