Default Craigslist for pre-war baseball ???

Posted By: Dave F

Has anyone ever had good success picking up any pre-war cards through craigslist? how about selling on there as well? I have to admit I threw a card up on there this morning for the heck of it and it sold...for almost twice what it was worth. I guess the cautionary steps with craiglist is to use paypal for buying or selling...anything else??

I guess my one concern would be that it I was selling a particularly valuable card, the buyer would have my return address (on the envelope or via email). With Ebay you're selling to folks all over the country. On Craigslist, it's usually folks in the same city. They live near you and now they know you (might) have alot of valuable cards. If I was selling on Craigslist frequently, I might take the extra step of getting a PO Box. Craigslist is a great resource, but that 1% who use it for nefarious purposes can be real sh*ts.

What Anthony stated is exactly what I worry about. Especially the area that I live in....well I wouldn't want anyone knowing where I live and that I have the cards I do.

Dave, if you don't mind me asking, was the buyer in and around your area?

the buyer was in metro atlanta, same as myself. it was a case of a $75 card I sold for $150 through paypal...and to a confirmed address. I don't think i'm too worried about him thinking I have more cards in that range...I'm not going to start listing $2000 cards anytime soon.

But, I'm also unaware of how you can get the person's address through paypal that your sending money to? I just tried to look up the last couple I sent payments and didn't see either person's address. If need be I can always stick my work address on the envelope as well.

I have purchased a lot of stuff on Clist, but only one pre-war lot.

About 3-4 years ago I purchased about $1500 worth of pre-war cards on Clist, including an uncatalogued Ruth item. I met the guy at a Starbucks in Manhattan, examined the cards, and paid him in cash.

There were about 20-30 cards, including a Big Head Ruth strip card, another Ruth strip card, a T206 red background Cobb, and some other cards.

The Ruth was a tag from an article of clothing (I think), and was produced in Brooklyn. It was orange colored, and square shaped.

I remember at some point someone on this board posting a photo of it that it was their favorite Ruth item. If I remember correctly, I sold it for $1200, and the rest of the cards for about $1500. Not bad for about a 2 week turnaround.

Over a year ago I bought some "antique baseball cards" from a woman in DC who found them while renovating her house. They basically fell down from the ceiling. I met her and paid $125 for 15 very PR T206 cards that had a bunch of key cards and Hall of Famers. I doubled my money.
