Default Black and White HOF plaque poster? Pic added!

Posted By: Alan Elefson

Hi-
I recently acquired a large black and white hall of fame plaque of Herb Pennock that supposedly was originally diplayed at the Baseball Hall of Fame. I do not yet have a picture but I will when I return home on Friday and will post it here. It is more than two feet high and about a foot wide. It seems to be a heavy cardboard poster encased in a heavy wood frame (it seems like a "nicer" frame). I am guessing this was not displayed in the HOF, but I got it at a very good price (flea market find), so it does not bother me. However, I figured I would ask a few questions just in case.
1. Were there ever blown up black and white HOF plaques hanging at the Hall of Fame?
2. If so, where did they all go?
3. When were they made?
4. When were they taken down?
5. Has anyone seen such a poster before?
I will email the hall of fame to see if they can tell me anything, but I also greatly appreciate your help.
Thanks in advance,
Alan Elefson

Hi-
Here is the image I promised of the Herb Pennock Black and White Hall of Fame Plaque Poster I posted about earlier this week. It measures more than 3 and a half feet tall and more than 2 and a half feet wide (including the frame) and it is quite heavy. I walked it around a local show this morning, and a dealer there who said he visited the Hall in the 1960s remembered seeing something like this poster hanging in the entryway of the Hall. Can anyone confirm this (old Hall pictures would be great)? Has anyone ever seen one of these for sale before? Any other information you have would be greatly appreciated. I will also email the hall (now that I have a picture), but I figured I would check here as well. I am sorry for the poor quality picture (taken with a cell phone camera).
Thanks in advance,
Alan Elefson

Hi-
I figured I would give this thread a bump to see if anyone in Net54 land has ever seen one of these posters before, or if anyone can confirm that this once hung in the Hall of Fame.
Thanks in advance,

I'm by no means and authority on these, but Jacob Wirth's restaurant in Boston has a half dozen or more of these posters depicting numerous players hanging in their front hall entrance. They appear to be the same size, although if memory serves me, the background is more yellow beige (like the cards) than black and white.

I would assume that they were never meant to hang in the hall, and were more of a souvenir of the hall, but I could be mistaken.

Greg

As a scarce display piece, I think it's worth more than what you paid. You just have to learn to love Herb Pennock. Actually, that it's Pennock gives credence to it being an official production. If it was a cheapo ripoff for quick bucks, you'd expect it to be Ruth or Cobb or Mantle, not Herb Pennock. Also, whenever there was a mass reprinting or commercial production, you will invariably see examples all over the place, including on eBay. For example, you see those reprint Moxie Ted Williams tin signs all over the place. I haven't searched the market, but haven't before seen one of these jumbo plaques. If you can't find other examples on the market, that's evidence that it's rare.

Al,

You can give them a call, but I doubt you're going to get any information. I remember those pieces being there for at least twenty five years and I doubt anyone is going to have much that will help you. We've been in contact with ownership numerous times regarding the beer history aspect.

Good luck,
Greg
