Default Stolen Checking Account- checks no good...

Posted By: leon

Today I noticed I had checks withdrawn on my account that had someone elses name on them...with my bank account #. Someone took a check from my wife or I and then printed their own checks with my account number. Fortunately they only cashed 3 (total of a little over $500) and I had to close my account today. Bank of America is all over it and I hope they catch the da** thieves. If anyone has a check from me that they have not cashed please don't try it...it won't be good...email me privately and we can take care of it. ...another fun filled day....and I had the account 21 years...what a shame....regards

edited for spelling and to clarify the title..

It's happened to us too. What a freakin' nightmare. There is a series currently in the NY Times with periodic articles about how the internet makes it so easy for the computer savvy to steal people's money. Often it is done by teenagers. The whole thing is sickening.

I received as payment recently for an eBay auction a forged Postal Money Order. The USPS site has a good guide to identifying the forged versions.

Banks are supposed to verify the signature on every demand deposit draft (a check). The bank is responsible for forgeries and the like until 10 days after they have sent you your monthly statement with the cancelled checks or copies of them. I mention this because the bank should cover all of those checks, you shouldn't lose a cent.

If they hit you with even a fee, you need to go have a conversation with them.

Good luck with it all.

Frank.

I saw a thing on cable tv
they were interviewing a woman I believe was called....
the virginia watchdog.......
she was showing the tv interviewer how she could go to I believe any county recorders office & look up personal info like your social security #,,, home address etc.....
really scary stuff......
almost anything on u is available on line if u know where to search
I'm surprised identity theft isn't worse than it currently is
all i can say.......is be extra careful with personal info & who u give it to

Sorry to hear about your checking problems. I was in Seattle this weekend and lost my checkbook. I had visions of similar problems arising, but when I returned home, I got a call from the Mariners office that my checkbook had been found at Safeco and had been turned into lost and found. There are still a large number of good and honest people around.

I do believe there are still more good people than bad. The bank issued 2 of the 3 refunds immediately and said the other would take 48 hours. I will not be out a cent...and Bank of America was extremely good in this whole matter.....

Finding the checkbook did ruin my one good (but overused) line about it being missing: whoever found the checkbook would be spending less money with it than I was spending....

This is why I don't write checks and don't have a credit card. They steal your idenity if you don't leave a paper trail.

I saw a show some years ago about check thieves. They can take your check, put it in a certain solution, ( dont know what it was) and disolve the in from your pen, but leave everything else on the check. The check becomes a perfect blank and the fun begins. I check my bank account every 2 or 3 days on line just because i'm a little paranoid of just such things. Well, the real reason is I cant remember how much I spend on cards, and seeing it on line jolts me back to reality. Joe

Forgery and uttering are serious matters . The bank will be the victim if you get your money back but a shame about the cards . I hope they try to prosecute . This happens far to often now .

Never happens to me...although my checks make it clear I am a teacher and therefore ensures that people know I have no money in my account.

The post office is a great place to cash your postal money orders. They will cash them. And there's no way you end up with a bank service fee if you're cashing at the post office.

I thought I should pass this along. Now you can see anyone's drivers license in the United States on the internet. I just searched mine and there it was, picture and all!
The good news is you can opt out,I definitely removed mine. I suggest you do the same. Go to the website and check it out. Just enter your name, city and state to see if yours is on file.
After your license comes on the screen click the box marked
"Please Remove"
This will remove from public viewing, but not from law enforcement access.
