Default Piedmont 350-460 Factory 42 Color Survey

I'm trying to gather any information I can regarding the two different shades of blue used to print the Piedmont 350-460 Factory 42 backs. I believe there could be some good information to be learned but more data is needed to be sure.

Anything shared is appreciated and please let me know which subject and which blue you have, light or dark. If you're not sure and can post a scan that would also be helpful.

Default Factory 42

Tim,

Picked up my first via REA (an oversight I'm sure). It was the light blue print almost the shady look. On my way to Chicago now but will scan on tuesday night.

Hi Tim,
I have 24-25 Fact 42's, but I don't have them all scanned....

Here is a very light Blue Kleinow:

And a Dark one of his buddy Frank Smith...

I'll try to post a list and some more scans tonight...

Be well Brian

PS I only have a few really "light blue", most are "medium blue" and 4-5 are really dark blue...

Thanks to Mike Healer, I have this Factory 42 WaJo. But, I'm not sure if this is the light or the dark blue - looks like medium blue to me.

Brian - Thanks for posting all the scans. Impressive to say the least.

Thanks to everyone that has contributed both in the thread and privately. So far I've logged inputs on all but 18 of the subjects from this subset. As expected some have been confirmed with only light, others with only dark, and several with both. More information is needed so if you have anything to share please let me know.

Here is my Crawford (with bat). The registration is light but the ink color is definitely dark.

Default Piedmont 350-460 Factory 42 Color Survey

Tim,

Great thread.

I own the following:

Ames (Hands Above Head) - Light
Bender (No Trees) - Dark
Snodgrass (Catching) - Light

Looks like the Bender (No Trees) is one that has both light and dark blue backs.

Tim-
I'm sure you've considered this already, but why wouldn't you think that all the factory 42's started out dark blue, and some have just faded more than others over the years?

It might be nice to take the light blue backs you have and see if the ink on the front of those cards may also be lighter than expected. Correlation between light ink on front and back may help you figure the mystery out as well.

Michael - Because the color variations are too great. T206's that were placed in scrapbooks or tucked away 100 years ago will appear darker and richer in color than ones that have been well handled and worn but both will still be relatively the same color. The contrast in the light blue and dark blue Piedmont 42's is too great in my opinion (and I believe others) to have originally been the same shade of blue.

Hi everyone, I just joined this forum and was looking back at many of the older posts. I know this topic is a few months old but thought it would be a good idea to list my Piedmont Factory 42 backs.

Barney Pelty - Vertical Photo - Light Blue Back
Hal Chase - Blue Background Portrait - Light Blue Back
Hooks Wiltse - Pitching - Light Blue Back (and it was my first T206 card ever)
Orval Overall - Hand Face Level - Light Blue Back
Rube Marquard - Pitching Follow Through - Light Blue Back

Default Jennings light blue

Great thread...I had not previously seen it. Here's a Jennings which appears to be a lighter blue compared to some of my other Piedmont backs. Sorry about the fuzzy image.

I'll let you guys make the call. I'm color blind, and ever since grade school when I colored half of an ocean purple and the other half blue, I've stayed away from calling colors...even light and dark blue. haha.

As a side note, I just took these photos now, so it's under artificial light, which never looks as good as bright natural sunlight...

If anything, Willett and Wagner look to be light and Pelty and White look dark, but it really looks like Willett and Wagner didn't have enough ink to make it a bold, dark printing.

You might also think that maybe they were lightly bleached that caused the ink to be lighter, but these four cards have not been bleached -- I checked using a couple different types of black/UV lights.

Thoughts?

Steve
