Default Type 1 photo of Four Horsemen?

This photo of Notre Dame's Four Horsemen was part of a small lot of football memorabilia I won at a recent auction. Is this a Type 1? I have that book on identifying old photos but damned if I can find it. It's buried somewhere in my ebay/junk room. Any help would be appreciated. Cool photo. Too bad one of the guys is obscured.

Thanks in advance for any help!
Rob

Rob, I don't know if this is a Type 1 photo or not, but the UPI stamp is from 1943 (when postal zone codes were instituted) or later.

Not type 1. Made later, but still a nice photo.

The photo is definitely from after 1958.

UPI came into existence in 1958 when United Press merged with International News Service.

Zip (Postal) Codes started being used in the US in 1963. Not sure if postal zones are different.

The 5 digit zip code came in 1963. I think a two digit number can be from earlier.

The fact that this has a file retrieval number (INP 312591) on it is the first clue it is not a period photo. When UPI reprinted photos from their archives they hand wrote the file number on the back. They also usually add subject information. Occasionally, though not always, there will be either a photocopy or an original caption sheet attached to the back. I have some of each in my archives. Another clue can be the size of the image. Pre WWII most press photos were 6x8 or 7x9. The 8x10 size is mainly post WWII and is actually an incorrect ratio to print a full frame photo from a 35mm negative or transparency.
