Default fake M101-5 Ruth

Posted By: Paul

This Ruth rookie actually looks pretty good. None of the tell-tale signs of a reprint in the scan, at least none that I see. Perhaps he stole the scan. I have never seen anyone offer so many ridiculous reasons for not getting a card graded. I buy ungraded cards all the time, but never from someone who offers 10 different excuses for not grading the card. And this listing follows a pattern that's more reliable than Newton's laws: the likelihood of a fraud is directly proportional to the number of spelling and gramatical errors.

Bid only if you feel lucky - or charitable.

This was the advice pasted from the description. I'll heed this advice and not bid!

Pete still has the page up on his site that explains how to differentiate between real and fake Ruths: http://www.caramel-cards.com/reprint1.html.

This seller's is fake, of course.

It doesn't surprise me to see a fool and his money parted. It surprises me to see how a fool and his money ever got together in the first place.

Look closely at the winners feedback:

http://feedback.ebay.com/ws1/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback&userid=jonesbond29

Guess where the positive feedback came from?

The seller of the Ruth posted a positive feedback to the winner (who had a ZERO feedback rating) within about 90 minutes of the end of the auction. I guess the winner must have rapidly paid using paypal.

I didn't realize that this auction had a BIN on it to begin with. I guess it must have because the auction said it was ended with the BIN option.

The auction definitely had a BIN. I swear when I first looked at it, it had a BIN of 3K, and then moments later it became 1K. Perhaps the seller reduced the BIN.

At first glance the card shows all of the signs of being real. Not your typical Ruth reprints seen everyday on ebay. But after closer inspection and a little investigating I have a theory:

After looking at this seller's feedback I noticed that he has spent hundreds of dollars on early newspapers featuring the Yanks and the Babe and at least one book from the Ruth era. All with nice photos that are card-like. I also notice that in his ad he states "no refunds on un-graded cards" although he states it's authentic. He also states that his scanner is "grainy".

Factor this in with the lame excuse of not having cards graded and it could add up to this card not being a card at all. I think it's a cut-out. Also notice the difference in the colors of the front scan and the back scan. I don't think they're the same. Lastly look closely at the front scan and notice the odd black ink spots.

There are quite a few periodicals that show/advertise the m101-5s including the Sporting News newspaper that he seems to know so much about. Just a thought...

I would stay as far away from this jerk as possible. I exchanged a few emails with him and he fits the "Southern Ohio" profile perfectly. As a previous poster pointed out, he's incredibly ignorant, setting up a shill bidder for one of his reprints and adding feedback 90 minutes later.
