Default Set collectors - which ones do you collect and how are you doing on them?

Posted By: Brian McQueen

Thought this thread might be a good way for set collectors on the board to meet others with similar collecting tastes. One thing I really like about set collecting is that it gives me a concrete "goal" to work towards. Although I'm sure the same could be said about rookie card collecting, type card collecting, etc.... Cards that are uniform in appearance, as many issues are, also look really cool when scans are lined up next to eachother on a website!

I'll start with my own collecting interests - For the most part, I try to keep things varied a bit and have gone after sets across several genres (ie...T, M, E, etc....). Most of these sets, or "subsets" in some cases, are a "work in progress" and would be issues I'd hope to complete over the long-haul, not anytime soon.

e90-2 American Caramel -- Completed but keeping an eye out for upgrades
e90-3 American Caramel -- Completed but keeping an eye out for upgrades
e103 Williams -- have 29/30
d311 Biscuit -- have 65/72
m116 blue backgrounds -- have 13/24
e98 Anonymous -- have 11/30
t222 Fatima -- have 27/52 (might not have these for much longer)
t210-1 Old Mill -- have 11/75
1911 Zeenuts -- have 90/123
1909 Obaks -- have 53/77
T209-2 Contentnea -- have 27/222
t205 minor leaguers -- have 10/12

I'm working on a 1933 Goudey set, in low to mid grade. I need 54 cards to go, 3 of them are Babe Ruth.

I love that set, great color, presentantion and a ton of hall of famers. It may not be on America's Toughest Want List, but it's been on Josh's Most Wanted list for a long time!

Great thread, Brian.

1913 Voskamp's---Have 6/20
1910 T210-2---Have 15/87

I'm also half way finished with the 1921 Exhibit set with all of the key cards and just need commons to finish it. I haven't tried to persue it but I think I will in the future. They're great looking cards.

Mixed results-
NL Fan Craze- plodding along, about half way.
T218's A few upgrades a month, fun set.
'15 Cracker Jack- need 1 more card, it's the toughest one, Jackson. Won't happen this year, unless I get lucky and find a decent one.
'16 Tango Eggs- halfway, stuck there for 5 years. May never see another
T200- only a few possible upgrades remain, keeping my fingers crossed. Anyone got a nice NY AL or Cubs?
'33 Sport Kings, '41 Goudey- halfway on each set, they pop up every once and a while. Slow and steady
'41 Playball- Upgrading to PSA 8, they seem to dry up and then a slug of them come along. Dry spell right now.
'48 Leaf- find an upgrade every month or two, but they aren't getting any cheaper.

Default Set collectors - which ones do you collect and how are you doing on them?

I am sort of a type collector and a set collector. I am attempting to put the t206 and the t205 sets together. I will collect a type card as it comes available in any grade. I just picked up Maranville batter up last night and a bunch of near mint 1953 Bowman. The Bowmans and the Maranville were sort of thrown into a prewar trade to even things out.

T206- about 30 graded and 450 ungraded. An emphasis on variations and backs.

T205- 53 graded, 80 total, 20th on the psa registry.

I generally collect HOFers and not sets, but after picking up a few e93s, I couldnt resist collecting the entire set. Ive now completed the set in an average grade of SGC 40, though always looking to upgrade.

Ive also got about 5 or 6 e102s including matty, wagner (batting) and Lajoie and have gone back and forth on whether to try to collect the entire set. Still havent decided.

Edited to add that I will soon have three of the four T227s (waiting for one to arrive). I will likely finish off the set when I can find a Bender.

I am a set collector. (Sounds like an AA admission).
I have completed the T206 (minus Big 4), T205 (minus the Hobby no stats variation), T207, T212-1, T212-2, T212-2 Series of 150 less Wolverton, T212-3, E90-1 minus Joe Jax, E93, 3 complete sets of E94s and parts of 3 others as I try for a master color set, E95 minus Cobb and Wagner, E96 minus Baker, E98.
I am currently butting my head against the wall collecting D311s, T210-5s, 1911 Zeenuts. I am 5 cards away from the M116 set with all variations and need about 4 cards in the E97 set. I have all of the HOFers in the Domino Disc set.
I still pick up cards for no particular reason such as 1914 and 1915 CJs, T210s of all series, Old Judges, and other cards from various sets for the eye appeal and the particular player portrayed.
I find that steering clear of any set issued after World War I has allowed me to maintain some sort of collecting sanity

...a T206 Collector. I don't have Wagner, Magie, Doyle or Plank, but I've got the rest. I have about 300 of them graded -- and have an average grade above SGC 40. The goal is to have the rest of them graded and keep the average above 40.

I dabbled in E95's -- got within 10 or so -- and M116's -- owned three once -- but now I just own one E95 (Plank -- it's basically in my T206 collection) and one M116 (Chase). I also own one T3 (Bender) and one 1933 Goudey (Grove). Otherwise, it's all about the T206's... always has been... always will be.

I am only working on two sets right now

1915 Cracker Jack need 16 cards including Cobb and Wagner but I am more worried about tough commons. After I finish the set I will upgrade. I would ideally like to have a complete VG set but the big 5 cards or so might be less. I do have a bunch over Vg so it may balance out.

E-90-1 I was able to pick up the Jackson so I figured it would be an quick and easy set since it's only 120 cards. Yea right...
This is a much tougher set then the Cracker Jack one.
As such this has taken a bit of a back burner role and I haven't added much recently.

I am expecting a large group of stuff back from SGC in a week or so that will fill in a lot of the holes on my SGC registry.

I also pick up 1914 Cracker Jacks and have been recently thinking of the T206 beast....

James Gallo

Looking for 1915 Cracker Jacks and 1909-11 American Caramel E90-1.

I can only get the E93 set out of the sets below. Only have 2 t213's because i baught them off of my brother. Originally only had 6 T205s, but i sold them and kept the Mathewson. Trying to get most of the E93 and E98 set, but i can never win anything on ebay !

T205 - just have my ripped Matty left.
T206 - have about 40-ish with 11 HOFers.
E93 - only have 7 out of 30
E98 - only 4 out of 30
T213 - only have 2

My collection is meager compared to many. I just do team sets so I can keep a roof over my head and maybe take in some nourishment once in a while.

T206 Cardinals Team Set - 15/16 (ungraded, not including variations)
T206 Cardinals Team Set - 16/16 complete (graded, not including vatiations)
T206 Highlanders Team Set - 4/20 (graded)
T206 Cubs Trio - 3/3 (graded; SGC, PSA, BVG)
T206 PSA 1 (back damage, attractive front) - 4
T206 Bill Bergen, batting, different backs - 5/15

I'm only really collecting three sets right now, slowly but surely. Glad to see more people haven't been listing these: Joe, don't start on the T209s so I can get them for cheaper!

T209 1 : 6/16 (trying to get these in SGC 30+, my set can be seen at SGC's registry right now)
E92 Dockman: 23/40 (14 graded, a few dups so if you're looking to help a brother out...)
T202 : 10/132

Nobody has listed the Dockmans yet, which I find surprising, because I can't seem to win a damn card on ebay, so somebody is going after these things aggressively. I also "collect" the T206 set like anyone else, but I haven't bought one in years, and mainly I sell mine to pay for the other sets!

T207=114/208...slow going
M116 blue backgrounds=18/24...more like a subset but my favorite

I have a number of sets I'm working on, thanks for asking. Here they are in no particular order:

122 T206's Trying to put together all the portraits first and after that go back and fill in the gaps. I found myself buying any T206 and I was all over the place. This way I'm more focused and am slowing down a bit.

1960 Topps Football, mid grade set, need 24 out of 132
1961 Topps Football, high grade set, prolly need 40 or so
1961 Topps Baseball, mid to high grade set, near half way complete
1964 Topps Football, Low grade set. I found this rummaging around at my mothers house 2 years ago. Every card is creased down the middle, like I had them in my back pocket. Need about 20, value not important.
1966 Topps Football. Another chidhood set. I have upgrade most, but this is a true mint set. Complete, but still improving
1966 Philly Football mid grade, need 60 or so.
1967 Philly Football, another childhood set, high to mint grade, complete exept for a few upgrades.

1963 Fleer Football PSA 7 and 8. I wanted a complete graded set so I picked this 89 card set. One of the nicest looking set ever made IMHO. I lack 5 cards from being complete.

I know most of these are not pre war, but I like to search e-bay and sometimes no T206's are to my liking so I can jump around a bit with these sets. All the sets except for the Fleer and T206's will remain raw and in albums. I often take out an album and look at the players from my youth.
I grew up in Buffalo and we didn't have a Major League Baseball team so football and the Bill's were my passion. It reflects in what I bought and saved as a kid. Sorry for the long wind.

Hi Brian,
My kind of thread!

It's hard to say what set is the most fun to go after, but I've been collecting the following sets:

E98.....85/120
E90-3...21/20 (tinker has two colors)
E95.....25/25
E96.....30/30
D304....25/30
T218....45/62
E79.....19/21
T206....470/524

Eventually would also love to finish:

P2.......Have about 40
E94......Have a handful
T213-1...Wow these are tough

There are a few non-sports sets out there that intrigue me as well.

Good luck with all the sets everyone!

Rob

Default Set collectors - which ones do you collect and how are you doing on them?

Posted By: Steve Wolfe

Hi all, I'm Steve Wolfe and although I've enjoyed reading here for a while, this is my first post.

Anyway, I thought this thread would be an appropriate "icebreaker" for me to chime in on the fun. I have many sets on the registry, although most of them are more modern than is the focus of this board. While I do have a number of graded sets, I'm also a bigger fan of my raw collections, and in addition to the graded sets listed below, I have at least one raw, and in some instances for late 1960's and 1970's sets, two or more raw sets for each year.

As my graded set building began to wind down, I've recently been acquiring more prewar stuff, especially CJ's and T-206's, in both case concentrating on mid to higher grade HOF'ers.

Of the sets listed below, all are 100% complete, but the only ones I'm actively upgrading are my Goudey, 1948 and 1949 Bowman, and 1952 Topps. All the other sets are pretty inactive, and in each case they are all of the "basic" variety, as I've never held much interest in chasing master sets, although I admire those who do. Anyway, here are my graded sets for what it's worth:

1933 Goudey: 5.45 GPA, #11 current
1948 Bowman: 7.23 GPA, #11 current
1949 Bowman: 7.09 GPA, #6 current
1951 Bowman: 7.36 GPA, #11 current
1952 Topps: 6.79 GPA, #11 current
1954 Topps: 7.42 GPA, #16 current
1955 Bowman: 7.52 GPA, #5 current
1956 Topps: 8.00 GPA, #14 current
1957 Topps: 8.01 GPA, #10 current (tied)
1959 Topps: 7.75 GPA, #12 current (soon to be retired)
1970 K's: 9.14 GPA, #7 current
1971 Topps: 8.10 GPA, #1 current (best 2005 & 2006)#4 all-time
1972 Topps: 8.50 GPA, #4 current
1973 Topps: 8.51 GPA, #5 current

I apologize that several of these sets are modern and thus not entirely within the scope of this Board's focus, but I enjoy them just the same, but don't anticipate much in the way of activity. I also have several player sets, but no need to post those here.

Steve

Great thread Brian...

I'm a set collector at heart and earlier this year was able to finish off the two sets that I have been working on the most over the past couple of years since returning to the hobby. T205s and P2s.

At this point, I've been branching out and doing more type collecting lately but still thinking about what to go after next as a set...

This is long overdue as I've been waiting to take the display down to get a good picture but if moderator dude will indulge the large scan, I thought this would be a good place to show one of my recently completed sets.

Thanks to Jim L. for selling me his "Old" Cy Young to help complete the task.

Robert A, this is what it will look like when you complete your set...

Scott: the pins appear to have the same variation in colors as is seen in the Old Judge set. Is that true, or is it my monitor?

1887 N172 Detroit Old Judges. I have 23 of 28 issued 1887 poses split amongst 9 members of the team. They can be viewed here => http://www.sgccardregistry.com/index.asp?action=5&setid=168

It can be tough going after all the poses, but I enjoy the challenge.

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

Simply Amazing! I've never really given much thought to the P2's, but seeing an entire set like that...wow! Great Display!!!

Haven't really focused on the many really old sets. Didn't really start doing sets until a few years ago. Do have these completed or partial:

1887 N28 (all 50.....favorite All-Time set)
need 4 for 1923 W515-2 (the pictures in Standard Catalog are mine...sent them to Lemke after article in SCD a few years ago)
Need 60-70 1933 Goudeys (mostly HOFers)
1941 Play Ball (complete)
1952 Topps (need 2 HIs)
1953-1954 Topps
1956 Topps
Have little over 1/2 of '55 Topps set (the run from 1952-1956 Topps is my Topps favorites)
Then from 1969-1986 Topps

Just T205's right now, but with the Home Run Baker I picked up today I have 105 with some of the tougher variations. Low Grade with a few higher. collecting on a budget is always a challenge!

If Scott will out himself about how close he is in E107 and W600, so will I.
I have 54 different Yum Yums; need 9 known poses.
I have 72 different G & Bs; I need 17 known poses.
I also need about 20 2006 Topps Heritage single prints.

Not to derail the thread because I enjoy hearing what sets others are working on but, to answer your question, it is not your monitor. There are definitely some differences in tone with P2s.

The large letter pins are usually darker than their smaller letter counterparts for example. I also have a couple pins that have a bit of a pinkish hue in them but nothing like the distinct pink color which can be found on some OJs.

Scott

Richard- Having 54 Yum Yums and 72 G & B's is certainly among the hobby's greatest accomplishments, considering even an advanced collector might typically have one or two of each.

Guess I should count how many sets or near sets I've sold over last 6-8 years but for now.........

Colgans........have about 250-300 total, mostly E254's
BF3's......have about 250 or so total all types including college pennants
1947-1966 Exhibits.......need 9 (6 teams and Ferris Fain,
Frank Gustine and Ed Stanky....anyone?)
N224 Kinney Military........375+/622
Lots of near sets in A&G Non-Sports
Lots of near sets in Mrs. Sherlocks, Kolbs, P2's, Cracker Jack Pins........

Just sold 162+ B18's in REA, 476 T206's in REA

Richard......I'll find those 20 shortprints you need and trade you straight up for Yum Yum's or G&B's

I was thinking the same thing. Ive got to admit, while I dont buy them anymore, the thing that got me back into the hobby a few years ago and ultimately sparked my interest in pre war cards were the topps T206 set and the Topps Heritage sets.

That was one of the very few I wasn't able to find when I sold my almost complete set through Mastro a few months ago (as you well know). Maybe some day we can convince the powers that be that the Mullin black hat large letter pin is a phantom and never existed!
Seeing your set displayed made me a little sad when I thought of mine being gone but then again I've been able to add some OJs and caramel cards to my collection for the price obtained.

This is an awesome thread. It's great to see what everyone is working on.

I do sets, too. Mostly from years the Yankees won the World Series (I eventually want to have all 26), plus a HOF type card set, and T205s. Here's where I stand:

T205s: About 30% done, in SGC holders, mostly in 30-40 grade.
1928 W502s: Looking for high-grade, in SGC holders, just started this.
1938 Goudey: 100% done but constantly upgrading, PSA holders, looking for PSA 6-8.
1939 Goudey R303 (B): About 85% done, can't wait for the new SGC holder.
1961 Topps: About 90% done, raw, NM condition.
1998 Leaf Rookies & Stars: About 80% done, bores me to tears.
HOF Set: About 50-60% done, all SGC, always looking for new card types and HOFers.

Within the next few months, I intend to start a set from the 40s, and maybe one from 1936.

-Al

I started collecting sets and made it through
T 200 complete set
T 201 complete set
T 203 complete set
T 205 complete (209 cards)
T9 Boxing complete set

Then somewhere along the line I started to collect felts

BF2 Fergusons complete set
BF3 mini felts, about 380 at last count
1913 cravats (14 out of 19) impossible to find
1914 B18 blankets, about 170

Presently back to cards and over halfway on a Delong set
