I am having a very difficult time convincing myself to make the long drive. At this point I am almost exclusively a 19th century collector and the last couple of shows there was hardly anything there worth the trip.

Hi All--I will be at the Reading Show (technically not Philly) on Friday and Saturday. If anyone is interested in getting together Saturday around 12:30 in the food area, I'm certain a few of us will gather. I know Jeff Mohler will be in attendance, and I hope others like Scott Mosley, John Z, Don Johnson, etc. Come on Kevin, you can make the drive and happily find good values.

I'll be there Saturday early afternoon -- I've never been to one before. I'm usually interested in acquiring T206 HOF's at PSA grade 6 & 7. What's your opinion as to whether there will be any kind of supply, and whether prices are reasonable (i.e., less than on ebay). Thanks and regards.

I went most of the day Saturday. The crowd was nowhere what you would get at Fort Washington. Especially since there won't be a summer show. It was depressing to see the tables with the modern cards crowded compared to the vintage sellers. Also SGC had to shutdown in the early afternoon for the rest of the day because of a computer crash. We had a small get together at lunch time for the board members. Scott Mosley, Keith O'leary, Michael Peich, Dan McKee, Ted Golden, Ted Z, and John(Wonkaticket) and a few others. Most of the people think it is out of the way and the show may be in trouble. I sure hope not. I don't buy much but the fellowship is great and I've made some really great friends that get together every once in awhile.

but I missed the lunch! It would have been nice to meet the rest of the guys.

BTW, I agree and also noticed that the shiny-stuff tables were a bit more crowded than the vintage tables.

I and the rest of the vintage card collecting community from Tuckerton/Little Egg were there in spirit.

The ride is what gets me. I used to go to the fort show. But that was just a 90 min ride.

I will try to go in the fall though. I would like to dig through my buddy Ted's table again.

First big show in years and had a blast. My one day off for the entire month of March and I spent 4 hours driving and 6 hours walking the show. Quickly ascertained that all Baltimore-related pre-war stuff had been wiped out on Friday. I stayed focused on some sets, which eliminated all the shiney (modern and slabbed) tables.

Best parts of the show were meeting Ted Z., who gave me a great deal on some needed stuff and Ted G. who happened to be at Ted's booth. Then tracked down Dan McKee to say Hi to a fellow Balti-moron.
There has got to be some place in the Philly, Balto, D.C. urban areas that can host a show like this. The facility was o.k., but Reading? Dealers said today was very slow.

My impression of the pre-war material was that it had been seen many times or was new to the market at a premium.

Hopefully, Ted Z. will remember my suggestion.

It was good to see the folks who congregated at the food area Saturday afternoon. John Wonkaticket is a laugh a minute/second, and it was fun trading stories with everyone. I agree with Dave Stinsman--the cameraderie is great. By the way, Ted Golden mentioned that Mr. Mint had suffered a heart attack.

Barry--I think Bob S. has greatly reduced his restrictions on shiny new stuff. There were dealers with vintage offerings like Roger Burns, Terry Knouse III, Dan McKee, Steve Verkman, Ron Vitro, Wayne Varner, and Tony and Rose Carafiel. And, what was available was most expensive, but for the most part there wasn't a whole lot of interesting stuff apart from the usual T series: 206, some 205s, a handful of 207s, and some VERY expensive Turkey Reds (high and low grade). I always look for Pinkerton postcards, and found one: Cobb at $2000--had to pass on that one. I was also looking for 150 series Obaks and only saw a few that were up for auction. Only two Zeenuts. A few caramel cards, and ditto for just about everything else of interest.

There were also a number of dealers absent: the affable Ron and Sheila Barrett, Paul Stark, Rand Bailey, and a few others. And, while the crowd was better on Saturday (Friday was very thin), it was still smaller than Ft. Washington. I fear the event may be in trouble, and that would be too bad.

I know Ted Z. will weigh in with a report, and I'd be interested in knowing from him how the dealers fared. Personally, I came home with far fewer items than I have ever bought in the past--my wife was astonished, and I think secretely proud.

Despite my seemingly gloomy report, I did have fun, and always look forward to going to this show.

You know what's funny, some of the "kids" on the Beckett boards were lamenting that there weren't that many modern tables to make it worth the trip and that the show is mostly vintage. I went on Saturday and the drive was laborious, I am thankful that my branch of the Brumbachs vacated Reading and headed down to Philly about 100 years ago. Just not my cup of tea, I hope they can get it back to at least the Turnpike.

I get the feeling that the day is near when shows go the way of the dinosaur. I know collectors enjoy getting together, but prices are consistently too high, the distance is often too great, and the internet is too accessible.

I predict that within several years there will be the National and little else.

I'm afraid you are right, at least as far as pre-war is concerned. There are shiny shows every weekend if you want to go, but there are no shows that specialize in pre-war.

Frank Keetz used to run pre-war shows up in the Albany area (the last few at the Polish-American Club. I didn't think twice about riding two hours to them because I knew I'd find something I could use. Anyone know what happened to them?

I do love the lunch-time convocation at Reading, but truth be told I shoot emails to just about everyone I would have talked to anyway and it doesn't cost me $40 in gasoline.

Being in the publishing business, I did want to chat with you about Aralia Press and as well your rating in ratemyprofessors.com. You sound like just the kind of prof I wanted when I was in college:

You may be close to being right about having the National and little else after that. This is going to be sad because pre-war widows will be wondering why their husbands no longer journey a few hours to card shows. The wives probably like their free time away from the husbands... they'll probably figure a way to ensure that the shows never end.... TRUTH BE TOLD - it'll be the husbands that will either make up non-existent card shows in an effort to get the heck out of the house... those card shows will probably actually be luncheons or dinners in NYC (or whatever major city), you know - the ones that people make 300 post threads about on this board...

You east coast guys think you have it bad? Try living on the west coast and going to the very limited amount of shows available (that have nice pre-war material). FORT WASHINGTON was like a mini national every time it was open. That show was around a few times a year. If I could schedule work around a Ft. Washington show, I would. You east coast guys have it good....

I was there the whole time Friday evening. Very poor turnout compared to a Friday at the old Ft. Washington location. I know dealers did very poor on Friday - I would suspect it wasn't much better Sat & Sun.

Saw Ted Z as usual. It was a real pleasure meeting Ted Golden, who happened to be at Ted Z's table. He is one of the nicest guys that I've ever met in this hobby.

I agree with Barry. I have a feeling this is the beginning of the end for this show...

East coast, west coast. Hey try living in the Mid-South and having NO vintage card show to go to. If not for the National and the internet it would be an utter barren wasteland. We used to have a great Kansas City show each year and great shows in Dallas, highlighted by a National in Arlington one year, but now nada.

Well I went to the show with a bunch of money to spend and had a really hard time finding anything to buy.

I got to the point were I almost bought a few cards just to buy something, but I helpd off.

Seeing as everyone seems to think the show was week, I certainly didn't have anyone accept any offers I made on stuff.

I was talking to a buddy of mine today and I realized that the dealers will say they can get more for a card on ebay then I might offer them at a show.

On the flip side though I see a lot of cards on ebay that are much cheaper then the same card is at a show.

Personally I love shows, and always have. I love buying a card and not having to wait to get it.

I had actually seen Ted Z, Ted G and Dan Mackee at previous shows, I just never placed the names to the faces.

They are all very nice guys and a special thanks to Ted G for walking the floor with me. (Drop me an email BTW).

I ended up picking up a nice VG t-306 Gandil and a few cards from Ted G but nothing for the sets that I am working on.

On a sad note, I could basically peg what every dealer had and it was the same crap they had last show and the show before that. Most of it is either in low grade, low demand or overpriced. Sometimes it is a combination of all three.

I am sorry I missed the bigger gathering on Saturday and I am looking forward to Cleveland even more now.

I remember talking to one pre-war dealer who no longer sets up at the show who explained that the cost of shutting down his operation on Thursday to pack up and drive to eastern Pa, pay for table space and a hotel just wasn't worth the energy or money. This is probably more true if the crowds thin out due to the reality (or even perception) that the vintage material is becoming less a part of the show. Bob S. started allowing dealers of modern cards - refractors, Beanie Babies, etc. at least 6-7 years ago at Ft. Washington. And, while I think that I was opposed to it at the time, it does get people in the door to pay the $6 and eat food at the concession stands and maybe even learn a little about and buy the vintage cards they see. Ultimately, Barry is probably right about the limited lifespan of shows like Philly, which is a shame. Hopefully, there will be a September show we can schlep out to.

....."Me thinks the demise of major traditional BB card Shows is a little bit too premature".....

I will withold names....but, I compared notes with 14 veteran dealers (I have known for many years)
at the Philly Show, and they all had good sales. One in particular sold out all his "naked" T-cards on
Friday nite. He sold over 500 cards to a collector who drove up from the Carolina's.

I sold over 200 - T206's throughout the weekend....both Naked and Graded cards. And, lots of Goudeys,
and PlayBall's, several E-cards, many Bowman's and a few 19th Century (OJ's and Kimball's).

Anyhow, here is the list of Net54 members that were at my table....

Dave Seaborn, Ted Golden, Kevin Savage, Paul Kaufman, Mike Peich, Alan Trost, Scott Moseley, Joe D.,
Dave Stinsman, Rob (trobba), Lyle Jobes, Keith O'Leary, James Gallo, John (Wonkaticket), Will (willstk),
....and Me and Dan McKee....makes it 17 regulars and 5 "readers" for a total of 22 guys.

I would like to add.....

The 14 "happy dealers" were the guys who have a wide variety of cards from 19th Century to the
1960's......the secret of success is to "diversify". And, that way you are "covering all the bases".
The "unhappy dealers" are usually the ones with limited inventory, accompanied by high prices.

I really enjoyed the great conversations with most of the Net54'ers that stopped by. I showed-off
my nearing-completion, all-Sovereign, T206 set. And some members noted how neat it was to see
a continuous field of Green when flipping the plastic pages of the album......rather than a mixture
of T-brand colors.

At the show I acquired 12 more cards for this set either by trade or cash. These included stars....

Lajoie (throwing)
Jennings (yelling)
Willis (throwing)
and a tough to find Cicotte....with a Sov 150 back (SGC 60)

Also, sharp looking, photo quality, 1970's Japanese card of Sadahara 'O (someone please correct
my spelling)

The Philly show is geographically undesirable for me. The car trip from the Virginia suburbs of D.C. is simply further than I wish to drive. On the other hand, if the show were held within a reasonable cab ride of the Philly train station, I would go in a heartbeat.
