Picked this up in the Hunt auction that closed this week. I currently just collect vintage cards, but I attended Wesleyan and played baseball there, so it appealed. Question: Does anyone know the time frame when the two words "Base Ball" became one word, ie "Baseball?"

It's an interesting question which I have also been curious about. My best guess is somewhere during the teens/early twenties was when the single word first started to appear. Spalding's book, America's National Game, was published in 1911. The game is still refered to as base ball in the book. Other Spalding products such as the National League ball still used the two word name on packaging during the Heydler presidency. By the late 20's it seems that the single word was most common. The change probably took years to gain momentum towards one spelling over the other.

Default 1936 Yankees Ball with Gehrig and Rookie DiMaggio JSA

I've decided to sell this ultra-clean 1936 Signed Yankees Ball. Not cluttered with lots of autos (9) and as a result, this ball presents in very tidy fashion. Nifty and uniform green ink signatures grade about "7" or better.

This Ball contains the 2 absolute "keys" of this World Champion team... Lou Gehrig is alone on the sweetspot, and is untouched by any other signatures. A ROOKIE Joe DiMaggio appears at the top of an adjacent panel. Very rare to see DiMaggio's signature in this form.

Also on this ball are Frank Crosetti, Red Rolfe, Myril Hoag and 4 others. This ball has been authenticated by James Spence, and is accompanied by his LOA.

The ball itself is a gorgeous, rare, and ultra-clean Dizzy Dean Major League Ball by Rawlings. No flaws of any significance, attractive alternating red/blue stitching, and just a wonderful memento of the 1936 World Champs.

The price of this rare ball is $1,675 (which includes shipping and insurance). A great Yankees keepsake, which is priced to sell. With Gehrig "cuts" routinely selling for $2,500 - $3,000, this makes for a less expensive, more attractive, and beautifully displayable alternative.

If no offers are received by 11/20, please look for it in REAs next auction....
Interested parties can email me at imstroft@yahoo.com

Thanks for looking!
