Default Will Ruth stock rise when Bonds breaks record?

Posted By: Ed

It seems that Maris stock is rising, having had his record allegedly eclipsed by steroids.
Not that Ruth still holds the record, but I have a feeling that Ruth and all vintage materials will get a healthy bump from the 'roid blemish.

How much more popular can the Babe get? But speaking of things that hype vintage cards, did Ken Burns' documentary cause a spike in the market? I was on hiatus from collecting when the film came out and so have no clue.

I agree with Chad. Ruth is the most widely collected player, and his memorabilia is already expensive and highly prized. It may continue to rise because everyone wants a piece of Ruth. I don't think Bonds will have any effect on it though.

Any vintage item of Ruth will always hold its value because of the name. However, I don't see a huge jump in the market because with the exception of the 1930 Goudey, there doesn't appear to ever be any shortage of Ruth cards available at any given time. I would imagine throughout history, when all the Mom's threw out the clutter (cards) in their son's closets, most of the Ruth's were already pulled.

Speaking of Ruth values, I have wondered why the value of Goudey Ruths (1930 calendar aside ) seem to have remained relatively constant for several years. Is it just that they are not that tough? They seem to be the most popular Ruth cards by far, yet their values remain stagnant. Any thoughts? Is it time for a big jump?
