Default best looking Matty, Young, Johnson, Cobb?

Posted By: Joe D.

alright...

I am looking to put together what I deem are the nicest cards out there for Matty, Young, Johnson, and Cobb.

Not necessarily the most expensive or rarest cards (and I will probably look for SGC30s, no need for super high grade) --- just trying to decide which cards I thik are the coolest.

This is very subjective. I would love to hear opinions... or better yet see them if you could post an image of your favorite card.

My favorites right now...

Matty - E92 or similar
Young - T206 Portrait
Johnson - 1915 Cracker Jack
Cobb - Haven't decided (help me out with this one!)

Thanks,
Joe

As for the Cobb...my vote is for either the T206 Bat Off or the D304

Cobb portrait or Cobb action? For a portrait, I like this one:

it doesn't matter which kind...

I am just looking for what I would think is the ultimate cobb card. (again, not necessarily the most expensive... just the one I think is the nicest).

... that D304 is pretty nice and I do like the set. Right now I guess that would be the front runner.

My Favorite Cobb is the hard to find T227 but it's hard to beat good old red or green Portrait T206's.

I don't have one and I should, but I still think, for aesthetics, you can't be the good ole T205.....

Cobb - E95 or E227. Maybe Josh can post the scan of his E227. Great card.
Matty - T3

A few days ago I would have said no opinion on Young. But that was before Hal posted the scan of his E107 in the High Grade Low Grade thread. Wow. Guess I'd go with that one.

Johnson - the portrait - T206 or Ramly.

Joann

For Cobb, my favorite is the image on the Novelty Cutlery PC. Also found on the e121 series of 120, & W501.

Gotta agree that the Cobb T227 is the prettiest card out there with the Georgia Peach on it. It's going to be hard to get one of those for your collection, but they're beautiful cards.

Matty- t205
Johnson- t206 portrait
Young- nothing stands outs for me
Cobb- I think the t206 bat off is butt ugly. For the ultimate Cobb card you have to go with t202 with Cobb in the center panel too

Jay

I like to sit outside, drink beer and yell at people. If I did this at home, I would be arrested. So, I go to baseball games and fit right in.

I have always thought the T206 Johnson-Pitching card was a gorgeous card. I love the blue and white colors. This card often gets overlooked as the portrait card is so popular.
I also have liked the Matty-Dark cap card for the same reasons.

Thanks for posting that, Hal. That T227 is a great looking card, though Ty's nose is a little larger than I remembered it for some reason.

I think the best looking Young is the E98, but it depicts Irv, not Cy.

Wagner-J=k Candy, Voskamps, E300, and E135.
Mathewson-E300 and T206 dark cap
Young-I'm with Jay, nothing really sticks out. I'll say Just So Tobacco because it is his only 19th century card and pictures him younger and skinnier.
Johnson-H813 Boston Garter
Cobb-not too sure, many nice cards but not too many that really stick out to me. Maybe his E270 Colgan's red border or E300.

Uh oh...Jay and Colgan's red borders all in one post together....

Another candidate for Matty. He has so many nice cards. All the T206s are gorgeous too.

I also agree with your choice of the 1914/15 Cracker Jack Walter Johnson!

The E98 Matty card above is really nice too!

Zach, I think he was talking about cards that were attainable.
Not a card but a nice Matty.

I've always felt the 21' Oxford Cobb flies unbelievably far under the radar and is a completely mesmorizing image.........and Dave Vargha's listed above is an absolute screamer!!!!!!!!

Johnson 14' Cracker jack

Matty E93

Young E107, preferably Hal's....

Wow, what a wishlist. Good Luck!

1914/15 Johnson Cracker Jack is my favorite of him. I like how the picture shows his pitching delivery.

Cobb - T205
Matty - T206 Dark Cap
Young - T3

Johnson - T206 Portrait
Cobb - Clearly the T227
