Default All Sets Player Appears In

Posted By: Scott

I recently discovered this forum and have found it very interesting and helpful as I get up to speed on my vintage card collection (at the moment focused on my White Sox)--you all should be commended for the breadth and depth of knowledge that is available just by searching through everything posted here.

My question is this: Is there a site where I can go and enter a specific player's name and the output would be a list of all card sets that the player appears in? I don't care about recent sets but, say, any of the pre-WW2 sets. Of course, one could tediously go through the Standard Catalogue of Baseball (which I have) but I was thinking there should be some kind of online database that would have this info. Any leads would be helpful.

Thanks.

Brett has done a great job on this, for at least HOF's, and it's in our "links" page too...but you would have needed to know it was there...welcome aboard ... and as always....best regards

There is nothing out there that you are specficially looking for. The closest your are going to come is the site Leon mentioned. I have a very selective database with a list of every major leaguer that appeared on a card from 1908-1945. It notes players and the sets they appeared in that meet my criteria for a card, which is being the size of a postcard or smaller. Sets like T3s and such are not in my database. I also lack the ability to look for players by team. Also, I aquire cards for a given player my database deletes the set data since I have no need to look for that player anymore. So if you were to ask me about Patsy Daugherty, I wouldn't be able to tell what sets he is in since I have one of his cards and his data has been removed from my list.

I like to sit outside drink beer and yell at people. If I did this at home I would be arrested, so I go to baseball games and fit right in.

It would be great if all that info were in Excel that way one could sort by team, player, year, brand, etc. I'll start typing all that info in my free time, yeah right. I may just have to pay someone to enter that data in for me.

On the Beckett web site for I believe $2.95 a month you can search by player name and get a pretty complete check list of vintage cards as well as modern. Also, if it's White Sox you're interested in, I have an extensive vintage database checklist I'm happy to share. (Unless you're the person I once sent it to who never bothered to respond with even a simple thank you).

It's not an online resource, but Beckett published the Sport Americana Baseball Card Alphabetical Checklist for a few years. I have the 6th Edition, which was published in 1994.

It lists everyone who ever appeared on a baseball card, with all the cards they were on under their name.

The Beckett Alphabetical guide is a bit incomplete, but a good resource.
