Default cataloguing question

Hi docpatlv,

Would you be able to measure this item (pasted below) that you posted described as "large" to compare whether it could be the same issue that Howard posted on pg 39 post #389 and described as 7x9?

No problem, I’ll try to get a measurement later tonight.

2004 Cracker Jack sticker and dupes...
I forgot to ask, was that b/c you don't care for Cracker Jack, or you had just acquired them before posting to thread and deemed that eating decade and a half old food would not be a wise move?

No, I purchased them in 2004, and bought more boxes than I care to admit. The Cracker Jack was a throwaway because I never really cared for the taste. Now if it had been Crunch n’ Munch, that’s a different story

I dug through my 71 Pirates mess to look for this one. Does anyone know how many of these were in the set? I have Stargell, Clemente, May, Hebner, Alley, Sanguillen, Grant, Oliver, Blass , and Cash. I noticed that the Clemente, Oliver, Sanguillen, and Stargell images were used to produce PM10 black box buttons.

Default this post about '69 pin reminded me of CU thread...

So, the pics above clearly show the difference b/w the original and the reprint pins: for one, Clemente's face is different and eyes are looking in a different direction for obvious sake...

Now, take a look at this CU forum thread where it was discussed that someone made a $5000 boo-boo when they purchased a reprint at auction that is slabbed as the sole PSA Mint 9: https://forums.collectors.com/discus...mment_11686941

The cert still shows active, for a PSA collector that has about 50 active sets, including the top MLBA Pin set for 2016-2017 (including the reprint item naturally). So either he doesn't know it's a reprint (which seems hard to fathom, since with so many others he should be a resident expert), or chooses to pretend not to know in order to compete higher toward the top spot?...Or, new theory, so many of his high-end pins are all reprints so much that he wouldn't actually know the difference between them??

Anyway, anyone have the know how and/or motivation to set PSA straight on it? (owner doesn't appear to compete in the Clemente registry so the reprint doesn't directly affect the ratings list, aside from reducing those who would otherwise have the highest rated real one) [I myself don't have any].

Well, at the very least, you would think that both PSA and the auction house should know better.

Default Strongly suggest not diluting this thread with PSA problems

The first and arguably most high profile card that PSA graded (the Gretzky Wagner) was trimmed by Bill Mastro - admitted under oath in court - PSA has never done a thing about it - everything after that - fruit from the poison tree. PSA imo has clearly shown in many cases they just don't care.
I have tried communicating with them in the past about getting things added/changed/deleted from the Clemente registry - always an uphill battle - they recognize transogram and bazooka boxes cut into pieces (single/panel/box/side panels, etc.), but choose not to recognize legitimate printing variations on the 1969 Nabisco (wide and narrow border variations), 1962 Salada coin (180/200 variants) and Bazooka box size variants (20 and 25 piece boxes)! They make their best guesses at the 1966-1971 color team issue cards (getting it wrong plenty), but will not slab a legitimate 1956 and other team issue photos. The 1967 Topps test giant standup is "optional" on all player registries EXCEPT for Carl Yastrzemski. I will not even get started with their grossly flawed weighting process. They would be better called PSI - Professional Sports Inconsistencies. So - fix a counterfeit pin that they slabbed when the owner doesn't care........good luck.

I finished the whole catalogue and will post it shortly, on the next page. Meanwhile, seeing as for the moment I'm the only one with a catalogue of what's already included in the thread and so can infer what can be added, I thought I would try one here:

I didn't know these were a thing until I can across one on eBay, and they're more modern so I'm sure not particularly scarce, but seeing as they seem to have had only the single print run? it was a more interesting memento than the more common yellow-postcard variety that is still readily available on the Hall site...

Default Catalogue for the “365 days of Roberto Clemente” thread

Welcome to the Catalogue for the “365 days of Roberto Clemente” thread.

Following a few notes on the purpose, content, and organization, you will find a categorized text listing of virtually every unique item appearing here and where to find it (both within the initial 910 posts, and as periodically updated, the following posts as well).

Purpose: building on the idea and work of OP docpatlv, with the extraordinary head start this has provided, the grandest vision would be that over time this thread becomes a collaborative effort at a comprehensive catalogue of every piece of Clemente memorabilia ever produced.

<>the specific purpose of the following ‘catalogue’ is to help forum users locate images/info for an item of interest to them, to compare to their own collection, to check whether something is already on display to prevent a duplicate upload if it’s not their intent to duplicate, and to check whether an item is already displayed before requesting a different member to post something that seems missing.

Current total: thread stands at ~675 distinct items imaged (last updated Feb-3-2019)

Notes/Editorial decisions:
-I initially built a sequential list to ensure not missing anything, but by the end it became clear that such an unwieldy list was only going to be useful by re-ordering it into a handful of broad categories, to facilitate easier searching at a glance. These are divided into a few separate posts, keeping the entire list conveniently on a single page of the forum. Occasional cross-referencing seemed helpful, but I minimized this to reduce duplications and so as not to create endless subdivisions of categories. (I am aware this resulted in the lighters ending up in the “toy” category---I suppose what can be said about that is that it is a good thing for the hobby [and indeed humanity] that there weren’t enough related examples to warrant creating a wholly separate ‘Incendiary devices’ category…)

-I debated it, but in the end everything is included,* even amateur art pieces (and especially the hand puppet ), though in the case of some items that defied easy titling, I opted to group them together and title under an entry such as “various [XYZ].”
<*a caveat regarding completeness is that for me the Net54 pages frequently fail to load images that are there, while not indicating a file is missing (perhaps it is a compatibility issue for the browser I use); anyway, refreshing always works, but I have to guess there is something else there, such as when the OP has stated “2 images of such and such”. I’ve gone through it thrice over for omissions, but if I’ve missed anything worth adding, let me know.>

-I’ve restated the item description and issue date asserted by the posting member, unless there is debate, in which case I provide the one on my interpretation to be that which the group settled on; (or if it’s something relatively common that I am confident enough about myself to relabel with its conventional designation).

-I’ve listed the date out front when it seems an essential part of the “published” item; I retain it following, in round brackets, when it seems to me a useful descriptor, but less defining of what the piece is. Occasionally confusion may be created when there is something described as a “196X Team photo” that is an image of that year’s team, but actually reprinted more recently vs. more usually, items that were produced contemporaneously; I’ve tried to navigate this.

-other descriptors are chosen here to provide the most succinct possible explication of the discussion surrounding the item; refer to the pertinent area of the thread for the full discourse.

-for items posted in duplicate I give both page/post references (only actual different items, not just when a reply “quotes” the original post and the same image tags along in the quote).

-[pg number] in square brackets refers to the thread page number where you will find the initial image posted; [post #] in square brackets is obviously the initial post, which I added for precision, but my experience is that using the navigation “Page X of X” near the bottom of a screen is the fastest way to get somewhere. (Quick tip: if the page you want is in the middle of the range and not displayed, just click any and then replace the tailing page number of the page’s web address with the page number you want, since the web addresses for these Net54 pages are quite short and tidy, and so are easy to manipulate.)

-Finally, I note that by some happenstance the catalogue begins as post #911, so now you can remember: the next time you have a Clemente collectible emergency and need to source an image, you know where to go…

The End.

And now,
The beginning…

Default And now, to continue the fun...

Now that the catalogue above is done, how about this one, which I suspect is a good bit more scarce than the one I posted on the other side. (I've observed 2 auctioned, but then, I only recently got back into collecting and am far, far from the expert here...)

This item hadn't appeared yet in the thread in either its intended cut or this uncut form, and I think it's pretty cool. I don't have it out to measure but I'd say it's roughly 8x10 in this full form:

Wow!!! Thanks for the list and for taking the time to put that together. I will, in the future, be posting more items from time to time as new acquisitions are made. I’m sure others will as well. It would be nice to have some sort of expanding checklist to review.

Thanks again for doing this.

Mike

It is my pleasure to be of service.
I do plan to keep up with it, and do so by using the edit function on the existing list---as the whole list is one place seems the only way to keep the whole thing user-friendly.

Default Beckett issue #50

I came of collecting age in the grand ol' year of 1988 and remember getting as a holiday gift that season the complete pre-built factory set of Topps baseball, straight from the toy section of the JCPenney catalogue, for $25 if memory serves. Good times.

It wasn't long before I discovered monthly price guides on the newstand and the joy of fixating on those little up/down arrows of who was up this month from $0.50 to $0.75. Wow! Good times again.

Anyway, I soon used my own savings on an annual subscription to Beckett BBC Monthly so it would come right to the front door, and I'm sure could hardly believe it when one of the first issues after activating my subscription would have been the one below, their 50th anniversary issue that you may recall (near 30 yrs ago now!):

Lol...those damn up & down arrows. I remember, when something would move up $5-10, thinking I was sitting on some gold mine. And conversely how pissed I would get when something I owned had a down arrow.

Yeah, and how they knew that a 1989 Donruss Mark Lemke rookie card went down from $0.20-something the prior month to precisely $0.17 cents the next will remain a hobby mystery for all time. (an actual example; for old times sake I flipped through it a bit when I made that scan above.)

and FYI in that issue:
-the Clemente rookie was "up" to $800 in NM condition [at least I think that's what the right hand most column was meant to be indicative of for vintage, but I couldn't find a key in that issue confirming that, not that NM meant the same then as it does now in the era of professional TPG]
-the '52 Mantle was holding steady at $6600
-and on the monthly "Hot-Cold" list, Mike Greenwell and Greg Jefferies were holding strong in the top 5, having traded each other for the second and third spots from the prior month (Canseco held at #1 of 30); meanwhile, some new kid named Griffey Jr cracked in at #20 from previously 'not-ranked'....I recall that he was very favorably scouted at the time and with a lot of optimism as well, but still no one could have known exactly how that was going to eventually play out...

Default 1972 Kellogg's pack

I picked this up recently. Not sure whether they are often seen in other circles? vs. I wonder how many were thrown out by stores or the manufacturer when the sell-by date passed on the primary product...

Default Very few around

The PSA pop report ranges from 2 copies graded (1970 cello, 1971), 3 copies graded (1970 1 card pack) to 6 graded (1972). I have seen the 1972 pop up from time to time, less often the 1970 single - almost never the 1970 cello and 1971 single! I believe I already posted pics of one of the boxes they came in with a pic of the Clemente card and an uncut sheet of the 1970 cards with Clemente. I clearly remember telling mom to get Kelloggs cereal to get the cards in the mid 70's - I don't think it was as early as these - more likely 1973-1976. I was starting to save things already, but never thought to keep these in tehir packs - couldn't wait to open the cereal box and dig through to get the cards!! Boy did I eat a lot of cereal when the cards were there!

Yeah, mine's actually a 10, but I cropped that out b/c I didn't want to seem too much of a braggart...oh, oops.

But I don't have any of the others at all and actually never seen them, so I'm quite handicapped in quantity and diversity. I guess I take my role here to post what I may have so as to coax others like Howard to 1-up it (or in this case, to 4-up it!)

My biggest joy in collecting has always been sharing things that others may not have seen or know exist. An extension of that has been seeing things I didn't know existed - as this thread has accomplished a number of times. I have definitely focused on diversity. So when I saw the post of the sealed 72, I recalled that I had the others and hadn't posted them. I don't really care much to brag as much as collaborate with other Clemente collectors to understand what is out there. The thrill of the hunt over many years has been AWESOME! So thank you to those who have shared their collections on this thread and please see what I post in a light of sharing rather than bragging.

Mike that Clemente bank looks much better in your photo than those I’ve seen presented in the past. Wish the Orioles would have made one of those stadium pieces too.

Thanks the banks are two of my favorite pieces. My staff think that its rather strange that I have such toys at work. They have no idea of the relative rarity or value of the banks. Due to this there is little risk at all and there is certainly no interest in them.

The small stadium model is mystery to me. To date I have collected three versions of it in differing color and sticker combos. I actually have a large roll of over 500 of the green infield stickers I assume were used in production. I have no idea how the stadiums were packaged or marketed. If anyone has any info regarding them I would love to here from you.

Ok, so that eclectic display is going to be a bit more challenging for me to catalogue than the average post on this thread....

No need to do so. Roberto was my favorite player but I collect his entire early 1970s crew.

Howard, these are roughly evenly split, no?
(I agree w/ you it would have been nice if TPGs kept track of them and considered them a variation of each other.)

Not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but I believe the 180 back is much tougher. Anyone out there confirm that?

Thought I would share a couple of original slides shot by James Drake of Sports Illustrated. I picked up these last week.

Great slides Mike! Are those from “soxphotos”?

Not sure if this was posted by Howard before, but this is a new pickup for me. Was definitely a tough one for me to find.

1957 Jay Publishing...

1958 Jay Publishing...

Well,

That is NOT a 1958. It is however a 1957! Both of those issues are incredibly difficult, but neither as difficult as the elusive 1956. See attached scans of the 3 (1956 batting pose, 1958 close up Portrait). A complete shame(sham) that PSA will not recognize/holder the 1956.

Yes they are from soxphofos. I have picked up a number of very attractive images from him and i am going to make a few high quality giclee prints of a couple to frame. Those Jay Publishing cards are beautiful. I'm glad I generally limit my efforts to Clemente items manufactured between 1970 to 1973. That being said I was tempted by the Clemente Tuscany Statue in the most recent Lelands auction. I'm sure I will regret not bidding more for it.

I did recently pick up a 1971 team photo pennant. I had no idea one existed so I was both happy and surprised by the opportunity to add one to my collection. It has condition issues but I am pleased nonetheless. It is the same format as the 1970 and 1973 versions of the same. I will post it when I have it in hand so it can be added to the list.
