Default What's your least favorite...?

I was just flipping through some old catalogs and saw the W512 Cobb (pictured) and though how it was a terrible looking card and got me thinking, "what are folks' least favorite cards of their favorite players?" We see everyone's favorite cards and best cards all the time, so let's see some of the opposite for a change.

So, you don't have to own the card to post it, but you need to get an image of whatever example you're going to choose.

In addition to the W512 Cobb, I found these two Babe Ruth's that are just awful looking cards of a great player.

1. 1949 JK 5 Tohoku Karuta Ruth
2. 1933 R337 Eclipse Import Ruth

Not a fan of T207's - never owned one before and don't plan to. Not sure what the artists were thinking with the lack of variety and drab brown backgrounds.

Ditto for the E91 set - especially considering the art is generic and looks like none of the real players.

I agree about the E91 set - what a total waste!

The W512 with all the lip-stick - UGH!

...and then there's the M302-2 set...done by a child perhaps?

Yes, those are ugly.
And despite their value, the 1948 Leaf cards are terrible ugly.

While the sets being discussed are unappealing sets, I was asking for examples of terrible looking cards of players. Not just ugly sets. We can all agree that e91's suck as do most strip cards, but I'm looking for specific cards of our favorite players that are unappealing. With Examples shown. Any more examples out there guys?

The E91 “series A” is NOT a generic set. It depicts the players as accurately as some of the in action T206 cards. Unfortunately, they didn’t stop with that issue and then generically re-used images of older players for the “Series B” and “Series C” sets. That is how Honus Wagner (series C) looks like Joe Tinker with a new uniform. I actually really like the first series of the E91 set and feel it is pretty undervalued.

Default Some ugly M116 Sporting Life cards

I noticed last night that there is no shortage of down right ugly cards in the M116 Sporting Life set.

The defense rests!

Man, the Topps photogs must have been spritzing the players with pepper before they took the shots!!

Rhett is accurate in his assessment. I always like to trot out an old post whenever someone lumps all the E91 sets into the 'generic' cubbyhole. Yes, you may dislike the artwork, but the player's portraits are based upon photos of the player.

I like almost all of the cards in the E93 set, but always was turned off by the Eddie Collins card, which is my least favorite Eddie Collins card, even more than the W575-2 slumpy man in a wrinkly suit card. In the E93 card he looks like some movie mask-wearing evildoer.

I don't ever remember anyone mentioning this, but does the E93 even picture Eddie?

That Leifield image sort of reminds me the 1932 US Caramel Jimmie Foxx with the really dark shadows all over his face.

I've always thought the N284 Gold Coin set is pretty worthless. Pretty much the same player in different poses.

I think you nailed it Todd. The side view shown on the card definitely looks more like paunchy, dark haired Jimmy Collins than a youthful Eddie. And Jimmy played his last season in the MLB with the Athletics in 1908, so the team identification matches. The back of the card just identifies the player as 'Collins'.

The E93 Standard Caramel set has been identified as a 1910 set...is it time to look into the actual issue date of this one too? In any event, I think it is about time to switch the identification of this card to Jimmy Collins.

BAck in the wild, wild west days, I had an Eclipse Ruth. I sold it for what would be minimal money now. I have never regretted it because it was such an incredibly ugly card. "Rare and undesirable".

In regards to the T207 bashing; well some people have no taste!

I always crack up at the 1958 Robinson. Easily one of the nicest men to ever put on a pair of cleats but he looks like a disgusted young punk in the picture. My least favorite sets though are the M101’s and their lookalikes (e.g. E121). Just look so plain relative to other prewar sets. I get that people like the fact that they’re actual photos but I prefer the the more colorful sets of the era.
