I know the scan is crappy but do you think this card can possibly be OK. The seller has no previous sportscard experience and uses the dreaded "my grandfather" line. Thanks...Alan

Yeah, the gpa phrase doesn't help, along with the fact it's the only card that he has.

The biggest problem with people claiming gramps left them cards from this era now days is that person offering that for sale needs to be in thier 50s or 60s in order for it to have any veracity and doubt any of these sellers are that old. My grandpa is 88 and there is no chance that he has a secret stash of tobacco cards since he was a mere infant in 1915.

My opinion: This card looks fake to me.

Side thought:
The whole "my grandfather gave me this and I just don't know anything about it" story is a sign a card is fake as much as the "got this at an estate sale" line of bullsh**.

Why? I was given a few cards from my grandfather and because they were from my grandfather who thought enough of them to keep them all those years made me WANT to know more about them because they were from him and not just a random garage sale find. I'll bet if this fool DID buy this card at a garage sale he would have done some research and that's sad. To react so casually to ANYTHING your grandparents pass down to you just doesn't seem like the typical reaction. At least I hope it isn't the typical reaction.

At best any seller who uses this story is really saying:
"I'm too self-centered, stupid, or lazy to find out anything about this item passed down to me through my family. But I will take the time to put it on eBay and deposit the $$$."

Such humanitarians.

If my grandfather had given me something that he had kept since his childhood, I likely would have been told everything about the card and when & where he got it one hundred times before he actually gave it to me.

Another point, with the whole Ebay hijacking thing that's been going on lately with Toni and everyone else claiming to have stumbled upon an estate sale or their grandpa's collection, I've been wary of these 1-3 day auctions for ungraded cards. One thing I've learned to check for seller's other items or what they've sold in the past. I'd feel more comfortable if he was selling other vintage cards but in this case, the seller has been selling camaras and pocket organizers. I went ahead and asked the seller what his policy was on returns if the card turned out to be fake. I'll let you know if he writes back.

The corners are a dead give away. Smooth even rounding on each corner. This card has been worked on.

seller says she can't come up with clearer scans, nor can she provide the buyer with a refund if it turns out to be fake. Um...NO THANKS!

Just to follow up on my message before, the seller did write back to me with:

"Brian, I am not a collector, I don't know a lot about cards. I'm sorry I cannot give refunds."

It would seem to me that not even knowing about what you are selling would be more incentive to provide a money back guarantee or to have some kind of return policy in place. But that's just me I guess...I would stay away from this auction.

The fake Wagner Minos have been on ebay for a couple of years - if memory serves me right, they aren't reprints, they are bad forgeries.
