Default Battlefields Part Deaux

There is an interesting new listing by our old pal Battlefields: a PSA 4 '52 Topps
Mantle and a '53 PSA7 Topps Mantle. With a 7 day auction it will be interesting to see how much bidder interest is aroused and where prices go. The '52 Topps, which in my humble opinion is strong, is now about $10,000. Of course, some questions might arise, such as shill bidding, unmatched card and holder, has Carol found religion, etc. Should be fun to watch if nothing else.

Battlefield has auctioned graded cards before. They were still photoshopped and returned by the buyers if I am not mistaken.

I don't know, obviously, with a 100% certainty, but I think, if these Mantle's are anything like her previous cards, there will be some serious repercussions if these also turn out to be doctored.

This could, imo, be the beginning of the end for old battlefield,,,,,,,,,,hopefully!

That same Mantle sold for 25,440 7/24/15 at Greg Bussineau Auctions. Anyone that has VCP can take a closer look at the card.

original auction

Beautiful card, but obvious crease is obvious (crease has been touched up on battlefield scan, as usual). Also looks like a minor black dot was cleaned up from the upper right blue portion.

The current auction item description....

Up for auction is a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle RC #311 vintage baseball card. This card has been graded a PSA 4 VG-EX! This card has no creases, light corner wear, near perfect centering, beautiful color, awesome eye appeal, and a beautiful clean back. There are no pinholes, markings, paper loss, or any damage of that kind.

That said, the previous description in the Bussineau Auction read...

It is very nicely centered with immaculate print quality, a beautiful unblemished aqua-blue background, and an ultra-bold crystal-clear portrait image of Mantle.

Bussineau seems to steer one away from thinking there is a wrinkle or crease. But at least you could see it.

Battlefield gets away with the description because it could be called a wrinkle vs a crease. But the photo is another story. I hope the f*cker goes down! And I wish I knew who was actually running Battlefield's page. I mentioned before that I traded messages and sure didn't get the feeling it was a woman communicating with me. Then again, I know women that talk like trucker's so I guess it's possible. The PayPal billing states Carol Battles. Could be a husband or son running it?

It's not even a good photoshop job, you can clearly see where the touch-up was done. It's blurry in the area where the crease was. Who is going to receive this card and not loose their mind when they see it has a crease, maybe two? WTF are these people thinking?

My thoughts exactly. This isn't some run of the mill card. Nobody is spending this sort of money and will be content with what they receive.

Mantle is still a good buy!! As for who is consigning, maybe they own the cards themselves? Just a wild guess on that though....

It's funny, or odd, the bidders that are attracted to her auctions. Just looking at the bidders list, some of those people have been around for a while, or have purchased quite a bit over a period of time. So much so, imo, that one would think they would be wise to ole Battlefield?

Again, stuff trumps all.

Didn't someone post her obituary a few months ago? It was posited that her family is still running the family business.

If that is true, then, as they say, "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree"

All anyone has to do is go find the legit and unaltered scan of the '52 Mantle to see what they will really get. At 20k, or close to it, it's not a bad buy.

Well, if anybody cares, and I am sure the active bidders do, the '52 Mick went for a tad over $30,000 last night, which might be close to par when it is considered there is no buyers' premium and there no photo shopping done. The winning bidder, with over a thousand feedback is no rookie. Watch out for fireworks when he/she receives the card.
